FreudsPocketCanoe got exactly what I meant. It's likely albums like these had a role in your life, maybe brought you through a difficult time or you just grew up with them. So no album that comes out today will have the same effect on you, no matter how good it is. That's why I say it's pointless to make comparisons like these.
Sorry I'm terrible at English and at explaining myself

Or, you know, that isn’t how it happened.
expand your imagination, all my super emo personal history jams are schmaltzy singer songwriter shit. Maybe there isn't a magic skeleton key that’ll explain all us misguided nincompoops not thinking this is on par with an old album

I was not referring to your experience specifically ("it's likely") nor did I say that I myself think this is on par with old albums. It's just something I often see in how people react to comeback albums. That's it, I'm not trying to invalidate your opinion lol which is perfectly agreeable by the way

Well, everything is of its place and time, so of course it is about how we originally encountered that album, and the broader position it has in how we remember and interpret that encounter. You gonna tell me that you've never had that situation where you heard some music and didn't connect with it at first, but now you adore that same piece?
At the same time, this is all partly beyond the individual, death of the author and all that. There's just seemingly something about a lot of people that can't accept that the same orchard can grow apples as well as oranges, and that's completely okay. Great, even.

Just remembered they released the "Humanoid" single back in 2018 as a lead up to a new record - pretty stark shift in style over the intervening years.
Glad this is the direction it went tho

I absolutely loved Humanoid, but I'm not sure I would like it as much if they kept following that same style without Sean. So in my opinion it was a great choice to go for something very different, rely less on bass, throw some post-rock in there, give new life to the band

Aurora reminds me of Kings of Those Who Know. In a good way of course

Weird discussion. I mean, why compare this to anything at all? What do these numbers mean? Do we even exist.
It's bizarre that comparison to older pieces of music are being disregarded as a vector of sorts. What about those who don't use this as a sole reason as to why/why not? Maybe I just want to keep this little circle jerk going? But I don't want to be left with the sayo.
edit: goddamn page break.

Let me be the really boring person who says:
Focus is good, Traced In Air is good, Carbon Based Anatomy has a couple songs that deliver pizza or lay pipe or comfort their stepsis or whatever, and this album is also good.
This does seem like one of those threads where everybody agrees (preferences aside) but it seems as if there's an argument happening anyway.
