"something without much in the way of frills"
I'm not even gonna pretend to know what this means. Does this album have frills? Idk how many bands in my 5s would go "you know, we've made some excellent albums, but you know what we need? Frills! Those Whitechapel guys have frills and now we have frill-envy."

mostly taking notice that your metal 5's basically start at 100mph and never slow down till it's over, never giving the listener an ounce of reprieve. are they generally good albums? yeah, even great at points, but there's something missing that I look for in almost all of them (i think we share at most one album, maybe two) that generally prevents them from reaching that next level.
they don't need to all do that, not everything has to entertain my obsessive need for emotional satisfaction, i'll agree. but when a band is able to break out of their shell and really write something that feels transcendental on an emotional level like this, Ohms, I Let It In and It Took Everything, or the latest Devil Sold His Soul... it's just so good to me and i'm often too blinded by adulation to see how someone could possibly hate it or find it boring.

the only good type of metal album tbh

some of the ones that go at 1 mph are good

you dont even necessarily have to soften up to qualify; Converge keeps the same intensity throughout but Jane Doe wasn't just built on the frenetic pace, tracks like "Phoenix in Flight", "Thaw" and the title track are absolutely just as important and arguably some of the best moments of the album. the slower moments arguably even being heavier because it gives you time to just get sucked into it.

not sure how his 5s equate to "extreme metal" and "frantic" when he has people like Black Sabbath, Bjork, Dinosaur Jr., and even Alice In Chains 5'd

I'm honestly impressed with the evolution of this band.

he also has albums like None So Vile, Close to a World Below, Covenant, Reign in Blood, Dechristianize, Those Once Loyal... NSV is great but it's the quintessential "100MPH without any breaks" type of album. while i enjoy it, it's absolutely the type of record i can only really jam when in the right state of mind.
@Faraudo: absolutely same

yeah it's a thing of personal preference, he likes those albums, he likes the chiller stuff, this ain't his style
you can't take a sample of extreme metal and use that as a reason why he obviously wouldn't like this or whatever it is you're trying to say

well he's comparing it to friggin Five Finger Death Punch which is such a ridiculous reach that it's kinda comical, i'm kinda just dunking on that

Everything that sounds like it does hears wh at is done.

as much as I dislike FFDP, it isn't far off to say that the style is there (the softer, clean guitar sections with the heavier chorus moments)... obviously I think Whitechapel is way better, but the style is similar but not as awfully butchered

well for starters the production is miles ahead, Kevin Churko sucks out any feeling of any album he's in the booth for and it's up to the bands to try to rise above it with exceptional writing half the time (which is actually a sign that As Lions are awesome because they managed to make it bearable). and i'd compare this more to Katatonia, Opeth, and maybe Sevendust to a degree (Phil's vocals give me a similar vibe to Lajon at times) than anything Ivan and co. have sharted out.

honestly shocked this didn't click for you judging by your top rated stuff, 4's to Opeth, 5's to Deftones and BTBAM, and high marks for Counterparts, you'd think this type of album would be right up your alley.
