I refuse to read through 14 pages of this review's comments to make sure nobody has mentioned this, but being way into math and especially its connection to music (I'm taking a called next year called Math in Music), I loved learning that this CD has a lot of Fibonacci Sequence (0 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21...)references. If you search "Fibonacci Tool Lateralus" on google you can find a lot of interesting stuff. The wikipedia page is pretty concise and short, but there are some sick articles about how the CD completely changes when you rearrange the tracks.

Even though they are overly artsy and too pseudo intellectual. I still think this cd is pretty good.

Although i love Tool, I agree with them being too artsy. The music is basic, and fans try to overinterperet the meanings of some songs. Another band I like for no reason.

Tool has really improved and found their own unique sound in the hiatus between the two albums i have, Undertow and Lateralus. I can't live without this cd.

I seriously think that this is the greatest album of all time, without a doubt. Nice review, although I would have been a little more detailed on this of all albums.

I really like this album for its complexity and production. Danny's drumming is, to say the least, superb here.

The only negatives of this album is that it's a bit drawn out(Triad), overly-sludgy at times (The Grudge), and a bit repetitive (Reflection). Even all of that said, not many albums come close to this one - in terms of quality.

Conclusion: Great album with flaws.

4.5/5

Also, to whomever said that they are "pseudo-intellectuals" - what is that based on? From the few interviews I have seen, they all seem very intelligent. Perhaps they are over-wrought? Overrated by fans? Maybe. They're not geniuses...But they ARE ahead of the curve - including the intellectual aspects of music. This Message Edited On 09.22.05

In the album art, where the human is cross-sectioned, the word GOD appears in the brain of the man. Pretty cool.

Either this or Aenima. The general consensus is probably Aenima, although it's divided. For songs, try Stinkfist, Eulogy, Forty-Six & Two, Aenema, Third Eye, Schism, Lateralus, The Grudge, and Parabol/Parabola.

Well, I understand now that this album is clearly too good for a shoegazer indie kid like yourself. Obviously the Strokes and My Bloody Valentine are much better.

Dull? Bland? Boring? Dull? Even if that was true, which it most certainly isn't, that would not merit a 1 out of a fucking 5? WTF?

Tool and Radiohead have more in common than you would be willing to admit. They both started out with 1993 debut albums, had minor hits with semi-grunge songs, but soon moved on to more experimental music that has been applauded by critics and fanboys everywhere. However, their rabid fanbases are often so annoying as to turn many other people off to the music permanently, and some people think the worship of the respective frontmen is absolutely ridiculous and usually insulting to the other band members, who contribute music and lyrics just as selflessly.
