Sophomore had some killer stuff, I kind of liked the first half of Andromeda, but it was already straying too much into post-black. Not a bad band by any means, but after their first album I wish they had stayed on that road.

I must say I've never really been a massive fan of this band's approach to black metal. Their atmospheres and eclectic approach are sometimes nifty, yet they never fully engross me. Their highly cyclical approach to composition simply doesn't hit me. I can understand why others praise this band though, surely once you've acquired a taste for their quite idiosyncratic sound, it's hard not to love. To me however, their music has always sounded sterile, unimmersive and compositionally aimless.

So when you say this record is anything but boring, I beg to differ. It's pretty boring to me and remains so upon repeated listens. I wish I could take part in your splendour, but sadly, I cannot.

I'd rather listen to people destroying their vocal chords accompanied with interesting music like the one presented here than stuff like overrated Ulcerate tbh.

Not saying that Ulcerate isn't great, I really like them, but this is waaaaay better. Ulcerate is sputnikcore so it'll obviously get a higher avg. Just wanted to point that out.

I gave their latest album a 4, so don't get on my case lol.

if you know how to do this kind of vocals properly youre not destroying any vocal cords. thats kind of the point.

Mementomori, I see you dig John Zorn's stuff so I have an obligation to respect your opinion lol.

Ulcerate was a v nice surprise to dive into, not gonna lie...sophomore, destroyers and their latest are top of the game metal, so its normal Sputnik loves it...

I had my first spins of shrines and fire a while back, but only this year I properly got around them. Kinda surprised myself shrines is nowhere near my faves from them m/

@DDDeftone: I love Shrines and Everything is Fire the most from Ulcerate: those are Ulcerate's most sonically intense and challenging albums in my opinion. Yet they are also the most difficult to get into. Destroyers has more of a post-metal focus, which made their sound even more immersive with its Neurosis-esque vibes. And their latest has a hautingly beautiful tonal approach to their sound, making it slighly more accessible than say, the dissonance and counterpoint of Shrines and especially EiF.

@Fraudo I beg to differ: Ulcerate clearly isn't overrated, they're just that good. Certainly instrumentally, vocally and compositionally superior to these guys. And the production on their latest release is far superior to this Oranssi record: the mixing on the keys is godafwul. Also, this band's use of ambiance is so mind-numbing and poorly executed, it makes the compositions feel far more sterile than they need to be.

P.S. John Zorn is a genius and one of the best avant-garde composers I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Take from that what you will. Also, I see ElioG has fived BWP by Opeth, so I can only extend my respect in return.
