New song is one of the better "singles" they've released since I started listening to them in 2005, but the overarching evolution theme is wearing a bit thin.

"They stopped caring about good riffs after century child tbh.

Which is ok, they have other attributes."

Ghost River and Edema Ruh disagree hard with this.

Come on guys, even though what I said was very hyperbolic, you can't deny that Emppu's role has become increasingly irrelevant since Once. He's just there (almost) for the sake of adding distortion to the songs, solely because Tuomas still needs to appeal to metal audiences. That became even more evident after Troy joined the band.

But sure you can pinpoint a couple of riffs here and there.

If this band is good for anything its bringing the GOAT Poet out of retirement.

Couldn't get into the new single. Wasn't the main writer known for being good at composing? Because that long ass intro in the new song is so bland

Flug nailed it, that's how I feel too. Some people just lose the juice, shame it seems like it's happened to Tuomas after Floor joined as there's so much space they can explore with her imo.

I hate how badly Floor is buried in the new song, it's all very nw thru the motions too.

Makes sense. To counter the meanie comment, shoot me your fav Nightwish so I'll give it priority when I go for a Nightbinge 🫡

Nightwish has two eras. Old school fans may say that Oceanborn is the best. Has Tarja on vox, has riffs, has great songwriting for the most part. Once is probably their most adventurous outing with Tarja and a huge leap for the band. Most fans would agree that while Floor is their most versatile and arguably talented singer, the material they've written with her has not done her justice.

agree hard. she's an incredible singer and all albums with her so far just haven't played to her strengths. i'd argue she's likely the strongest frontwoman in any metal band right now but it speaks volumes that she sounds her best when she's singing old nightwish tunes live. watching her performance of 'ghost love score' and 'the poet and the pendulum' is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

given the new song a few listens now and it's an absolute mess - an 8 minute song which is basically a pop song with a long intro and outro. the pop comment isn't at all an insult either, nightwish write brilliant pop-tinged metal and the songwriting just hasn't caught up to the bombast and ambition of the sound. the intro seems totally separate thematically to the song itself and the outro is just redundant. no one wanted to hear troy sing the chorus again. he's an extremely skilled musician but he is absolutely not a singer. whenever he comes close to the mic it just bombs any nightwish song.

worst of all it feels like absolutely everything in the song is lost in translation. there's only so much you can fit into a two-channel audio track and if you push too much sound into that space and try and mix it in a way that everything is audible at once it makes everything sound indistinct. the insistance of the overwhelming orchestra and the oddly reverby mixing/mastering means that you can't latch onto any individual thing. least of all floor who is the asset of the band they should be using the most.

dude, that Wembley performance of Poet and the Pendulum with Floor showcases her versatility so well. Unbelievably talented and her star power is through the roof

oh it's unreal. her versatility is her key quality - she suits bombast and intimate low-key material equally as well, and sadly the material past anette's tenure doesn't hold up. i do think EFMB is a good album - great at times - but it was a bit uneven and bloated particulalry towards the last half. this album was a total failure in comparison. i feel the next record will be so predictable that i could review it accurately prior to even hearing it.

Hope you're wrong because I really like this band but yeah this new song was a bit lackluster.

And that bit about Troy is spot on.
