The stupid titles make it impossible for me to remember which song is which but I'll just say the back section of the record is the best.

ok I know I said I wouldn't post but I have nothing else to do so I just wanna say that reading the lyrics to "12.38" pisses me off especially in conjunction with you saying this has "blonde vibes" goddammit romulus
I just
a lot of people will disagree but frank has the most incisive and honest lyrics to me about love and sex (even if they're "poppy" lyrics, i.e. simple/condensed) whereas childish gambino's lyrics are as dumb as ever. he has acting chops but it's sort of like his acting where he's just sorta grinning/mugging at the camera in this knowing way that makes me angry. I thought about posting a particular lyric or two here but literally any set of four lines from "12.38" is enough proof of what I'm talking about. silly puns, easy cultural references, bad jokes, posturing, just FAKE. also the song is aggressively uninteresting otherwise. just wanted to affirm the point about the lyrics though, this guy is ersatz

no please continue i like your posts!
i have zero issue with anything you said there & agree with a lot of it tbh but i am at the age where i am ready to gobble up some ersatz music. give me all that good ersatz stuff as long as it sounds pleasant in my eardrums

part of me wonders if i'm just somehow primed to hear Art in frank ocean and Trash in this guy for sure (bias/preconceived notions etc.). I can see how this is catchy and pleasant to someone but it's pretty boring imho and somehow I just feel like there's more creativity and daring in the minute-and-change of frank's "close to you" than in the entirety of this 8 minute song i'm listening to right now
these days I feel like my taste in music is increasingly linked to an "auteurist" vision, one that stipulates that the thing I'm really looking for in music is a personality and the form is somehow a vehicle for expressing that personality and the issue of whether i like or dislike an album is closer than I previously thought, if not exactly equivalent, to the process of evaluating another person, the person who I hear in and through the music, and I like frank ocean and I don't like donald glover. (and in the case of blonde, i'm able to consider even the blatant imperfections and blemishes as 'collateral damage' from the dictates of frank's personality: if I reject them, I'm rejecting him, and I love frank ocean, so I don't want to do that.) i dont know though obviously there are formal issues that seep out of that kind of theory, like how many goddamn producers and songwriters there are in pop music today, but somehow it feels like it applies here. anyways...

preconceived notions affecting how we listen to something is very real! i get that a lot with artists i already have an Opinion on and also albums that get critical acclaim vs. something that i just picked up. like blonde is probably the best album in the whole gd world but i feel fairly confident that if blonde wasn't Blonde by Frank Ocean but was instead Some Cool Tunes by Romulus i would've stopped after the first listen and never picked it up again
but i do have to give this one some credit! because i, like you, had mediocre feelings on donald glover pre this album (probs less than you, atlanta fx is dope) but this album won me over
i really gotta stop with this blonde stuff tho before someone jumps in this thread and holds me at gunpoint for using the two in the same sentence

I'm confused why Frank Ocean got mentioned in like every comment on this page, it seems like you're going in with the fixed notion that this had to be compared with Blonde for some reason

nah i mentioned on previous page that there are parts here that reminded me of blonde, alex was just referring to that

I get it, but when I read a comment like "part of me wonders if i'm just somehow primed to hear Art in frank ocean and Trash in this guy for sure", and then he goes on to compare Frank's Close to You to Sweet Thang, I kinda have to wonder if he was approaching this album in completely the wrong way? if anything I would compare this more to latter-day OutKast than Frank Ocean, but even then I feel like a first listen should be spent, just listening to the album on its own terms?
