I was thoroughly engrossed for the entirety of this, good God. Feels waaay more orchestral and atmospheric than their last one. Will need plenty of time to digest this further but my initial thoughts is that this fuckin kills m/
Also, fantastic review man!

Great album from beginning to end, has some great climax moments

Its epic, and well produced, performed etc.... but something is off for me. I want to like this more than I do. Very try-hard, I guess.

This is just some epic shit. I got a similar feeling when I started getting into Lord of the Rings. Sophisticated, ethereal, heavy... this a bad bish....

I'm halfway through the opener, may just have to 5 this lol
unreal...
|

Lol
I dont encourage 5'ing an album 7 minutes in. You may want to check yourself at like 15 listens to it all and at least 3 months later.
|
| |
Potential is there for me lol no insta-5'ing, of course. I usually give something I'm immediately caught by 3 spins, then a few months off.
But what an opener, though. Thought I was in for my '19 aoty but the action has cooled off a tad. Those "try hard" comments are spot on lol

Every time I rate and album highly before it finishes I end up regretting it

I stick with this 5. You need a try-hard every now-and-again who can make something worthwhile to stir the pot.

And I'm not sure I even agree with this "try-hard" pin. I think this is just that good. They've done what they tried to do.

Its definitely around a 4 for me. Will have to re-listen. Im gonna want to slap that opener asap in my ride fo sho.

So... this is like a stew of things that, on their own are not original; or even in some small combinations, are not original. Nonetheless. These guys are total freaks, in the best way possible. They mix prog rock and metal, symphonic aspirations with death growls (but only a little, and mostly melodic and worked well into the music, and mainly only in the first 15 minute track), high concept and some killer hooks, ambient passages and blast bleats, and... and more. And they put it into not a blender but very planned out and flowing songs. Astonishing in that way that you don't know what they hell you're listening to, and then it makes sense, but you can't stop listening. Instant classic, I think, and I can't stand growly vocals, so go figure.

Don't really get the try hard idea at all, yea. They've absolutely done what they tried to do in a beautiful way. Part of me thinks criticisms lie more with how true-to-fantasy-cinema it sounds? I can empathize with people not enjoying how "Disney" or "LOTR" it sounds but I find it weird brushing such a well considered effort off with phrases like "try hard". If you are going for something this grand in scale and theatrics, wouldn't it necessitate a degree of perfectionism?
I can't see sloppier songwriting or rougher production or less inventive performances making this album any better. I'm inferring the worst here of course but "try hard" is a pretty loaded term.

I just found this thanks to spotify discover weekly, been listening non stop for past 2 days. So good, fuck. Don't think I can rate higher since after so many relistens in one go it doesn't hold up that high but it's a pretty fucking awesome album nonetheless
