It's a scratch and sniff - the album sounds like raw fish smells

It actually reminds me of toothpaste.
They had the cover just with the girl like TWFM and then each member of the band smeared a big gob of whatever brand of toothpaste they use.
Matt's is the biggest glob, the minty blue fresh one near her hand.

What do people think of the short film?

I don't like music videos as a rule but watching that made me think I like short films based around music even less.
If there has to be visuals I prefer something more tasteful and abstract like the sort of stuff the Tindersticks use.
It seemed over egged conceptually much like the album.

It was the most indie thing I’ve ever seen I think haha

It was very 'The Tree of Life' without the supreme acting talents of Mr Brad Pitt
It seemed more like ammunition to the detractors yes lol

I think Not In Kansas is the only National song that's actually grabbed me in about a decade.

'I think Not In Kansas is the only National song that's actually grabbed me in about a decade.'
Bit harsh but that one is the most interesting addition here

I’m gonna avoid the film for now lol
on continued spins I don’t know what the fuss about rylan is, expectation abounded and I avoided listening to live versions and when it was released yesterday so I could hear it in album context - it’s pretty standard fare.
there are no essential tracks here, but the closest is surely not in kansas.

shocking take coming from me i know

2nd listen in, and I'm really not convinced about this one. The female vocals addition is a great idea, but it kind of buries Matt's voice. And fuck where are the hard-hitting drums like eg in Bloodbuzz Ohio ?

This album is like sitting watching the ripples in a pond with the occasional low-flying airplane passing by overhead.

Makes no sense to me that somebody can give their other albums a 4.5 and this a 2.5
It's not like their sound has changed that much lmao

If a band write songs of the quality of individual tracks I rated a 2.5 before and then fill a whole album with them how is that not a really understandable rating?
Blind loyalty to artists takes me back to being 15 and trying to convince myself 'Load' was as good as 'Master of Puppets' or 'Album of the Year' was as good as 'Angel Dust', something like that :/
