Oh god, there's genital mutilation? I got the uncut version too, great... Antichrist was enough for me in that regard, that stuff really gets to me.

but was it really 'humour'? as in was it intentional? or was it just funny because it was so bizarre and silly? ill agree with the second instance with the door/wires but i can't agree with glass/roof just because the image of the hairy ass were-witch arm just like awkwardly sliding into frame and somehow tying a rope around her by literally just gently tucking it under her side is possibly the stupidest part in the whole movie lmao

also i think the dog kill is reaaaaally silly haha. and by god it just goes onnnn and onnnn and onnnnn with the tension building and blind guy like whipping around and different shots of the square.

i dunno, i'm honestly probably one of the least big fans of darios in here, and as ive said before i think suspiria and inferno both have some awesome set-pieces and lighting and aesthetic value but beyond that the rest of my enjoyment of them comes down to a displacement from the time period that makes the cheesiness of the dubs, acting, directing, dialogue, mixing etc entertaining and of cult quality rather than just bad. and i guess that just makes my metric for them inherently different from people that generally appreciate dario as a 'horror legend' because at the end of the day i think Suspiria and Inferno are BOTH iconically bad movies lol. They both seem guilty of the same sins while both being a visually entrancing mess of a take on a silly ass premise to begin with. But then there is Mother of Tears which is not iconic, or "bad in a good way" at all.

honestly the VVitch, this remake, and the comic series Wytches are the only 'Witch' stories that portray them in an interesting way to me off the top of my head. Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires don't have much charisma either for the most part.

And yeah, full-frontal my dude, and it is not fun.

I love how over-the-top silly Suspiria is, but somehow it still gives me genuine creeps. I don't think humour was the intention, but basically every horror film from those days is very dated now. It's from another era, I appreciate that while I'm watching. Otherwise any old film would be unwatchable today. I'm sure the shot of the killer stabbing the girl in her open heart was the equivalent of Martyrs or Hostel back in the day.

And the dog scene... lmao. It just cuts from a puppet gripping the guy by the neck with clearly slack jaws, to shots of a dog chewing on a piece of steak that ends just off-screen. On paper though that scene is really dark... I mean they made the service dog eat the blind guy. That was his best friend :/

yeah, as I said so do I, which is absolutely crucial to my enjoyment of virtually any and all old horror classics lmao

i also love the scene before the kid even gets bit where they are just walking towards the building/dog with the most fucking serious intense stare of all time. like wtf is even going on here

I know you appreciate the old classics I was just explaining why the silly kills don't bother me since you were complaining about that. As for the duo, my head-canon is that they tried to do something fucked up to the dog since the blind man says the dog would need a major reason to lash out at someone. I always got the impression that the kid is an older witch who had taken over a kid's body for some reason. But can we talk about my all-time favourite scene in Suspiria? It's when Suzie starts bleeding from the nose and mouth and passes out, so the Doctor tells it's cause she 'tore her ligaments from not practicing enough' and then gives her a glass of wine to 'replenish her blood supply.' Lmfao

i just figured it was like animals can sense evil witch magic and so it bit the kid when he tried to pet it because he was with that other witch, and then later in the square as revenge markos, the grandmama of witchery, came 'round and thats why the dog started flipping the fuck out at nothing in particular cuz he could sense her, and then she did some kind of witchery to possess the dog and make it turn on its master.

on an aside, you brought up Antichrist and the trouble it gave you for a certain scene or two

but I'm curious how you liked it outside of that?

Yeah I think you nailed it, that's basically what I got out of it. The dog was definitely under a spell, it went right for the throat and chewed on it like beef jerky. I also think the scene where he gets kicked out is super weird and hilarious (YOU SEE, I AM BLIND I AM NOT DEAF). I love Antichrist, it's almost tied for my fave Lars Von Trier but I think Dogville edges it out slightly. Although I really could have done without that one scene, I think it was maybe a bridge to far. I had a really hard time watching that scene, or seeing merit in it other than purposefully trying to scar the audience.

And yeah, The Witch was a really good movie. As far as witches go, there's some great ones like House Of The Devil, Autopsy Of Jane Doe, Drag Me To Hell, and of course Rosemary's Baby and Blair Witch.

I loved antichrist too. The scene in question doesnt phase as much after the first time fortunately haha. Havent seen dogville yet. But I'd put antichrist in my list of favorite "horror" films which would really be more like a list of aesthetic masterpieces masquerading as horror haha

All the ones I mentioned are absolutely worth checking out especially Rosemary's Baby. And I consider Antichrist horror for sure, it checks all the boxes.

+1
Melancholia is more of a stretch to include as a horror film, but I'm tempted to include that too

yea a drama, Melancholia is not horror

Rediscovered some gems on here I hadn't noticed as much before, like The Jumps and The Conjuring of Anke. This is such a diverse, adventurous soundtrack. Really glad Thom agreed to do it and step out of his comfort zone.
