Thrice haven't been interesting for a long time. Not going to bother even rating this. I just don't care to think about how I feel about it.

chan, you've seemed to have taken a very emotional slant in the reviews you choose to talk about.
why is that?
i peek in to see whats up now and then but i always read your reviews. but it definitely seems like you judge music based on your own growth toward music and not the music itself.
just wondering keep writing dude.

nothing wrong with taking a personal approach to reviews
can we all talk about how good blood on blood is?

What a whiny review. Get over yourself dude.
Album is okay. Some cool guitar and instrumental parts in the mix, which I feel was missing from the last two records. Still kind of a bunch of unmemorable songs. I still think "Beggars" is really good, but the subsequent records haven't really grabbed me.

I agree. Not trying to pick a fight, but Chan ends up talking about himself more than the music in most of his reviews.

So do I tbh not sure why personal slants matter as long as your review makes the point you want to make
I thought the write up was great

Also, I just re-read the review and it mostly just starts and ends personal. Like 75% is still about the band and the album.

I guess I'd just rather a more concise take. In this example there's enough written about the album but still a lot of extraneous stuff. I don't mind a personal piece every now and then but it seems like every review is about how it made him feel, or what he was doing or where he was when he listened to it and blah blah.

That's my favorite kind of review because it makes the music actually matter. I'm all about how it makes me feel because without that there's just the technical side. That's obviously important too, but I have always been into lyrics and meaning - all of which lends itself to personal interpretation. I mean everyone is entitled to preferences on what they like to read, so I suppose it just boils down to different strokes.

well, i guess at some point every good band has a bit of a dud album. hopefully they bounce back. halfway thru and this def seems a little underwhelming on first listen.

I think (hope) it is an album that just needs to grow on some people. Like a lot of Thrice albums, it's a departure from the last and will take some getting used to. Other than "Hold Up a Light", I think it's brilliant.

Thought this was better than their last album though upon first listen.

Listened to this a few times now and my favs are Just Breathe, My Soul, Blood on Blood, and Beyond the Pines. Almost as good as TBEitBN but that one is a little better imo.

Thought My Soul could have been awesome but it just feels like a tease.

It's a very nice atmospheric ballad, kinda reminds me of Circles.

"I am forever waiting for religious bands to lose their faith." [2]
I find they're at their best when they're most convicted and most disillusioned.
Sweet review, Chan. Though that hardly even needs to be said.

Anytime Chan refers to himself it's always somehow related to how the how the album sounds or (could) make one feel.

I've never listened to this band...now I will get off your lawn.
