This review is very well written but like it doesn’t really justify a 5 maybe it’s just me idk.

I really think the vocals have gotten worse over time. I never liked them, but they were tolerable on Sunbather. They're soooo bad on this that I can't get passed them.

I genuinely don’t understand people giving this a 5 (or even some scores lower than that for that matter). there are some albums I may not like but I can see why someone would give it a 5. This though? This? Really? This? Why???

Typical Sputnik. There's always a wave of positivity upon a release date (unless something is complete trash), and then the critical voices take over as the loudest and most persistent. You have to shit out liquid gold of an album for this community to have a sustained positive reception. This album is nowhere near as bad as Y'all are making it out to be - kitsch and all. I extend none of this to Hawks though, who is often a very lenient critic who typically brings enthusiasm and hype to albums. Alot of us -- Anthony Fantano is a prime example -- are spoiled as fuck. There is new and diverse music coming out weekly, and we've all become oversaturated with options and thus comparison. With such a massive frame of reference we inevitably find ourselves comparing everything into the ground. There are plenty of reviews (Fantano's included) that quite blatantly deduct score simply because they are able to reveal the stylistic patterns of music, and are obstinately unimpressed with their "been there, done that" attitude towards music they've long become jaded to. Yes, good for You, You see the components of the music - "I can see what went into this; how very drab and uninspired this music is!"
I was torn between 3.5 and 4, but I love a majority of the record, and when it hits it hits just right. Opening track is awkward, and Night People is highly underwhelming (cause I'm a Chelsea Wolfe mark), but the core tracks are very enjoyable. The band's usual issue of bloating tracks, arguably inconsequential interludes, and flirting with genre lines too snugly to please everyone persists, but they clearly took more time on this project than New Bermuda (even though I enjoy the more aggressive side of the band, this is still clear to me). I've seen plenty of claims of "butthurt" towards the fanboys, yet in every thread I can find it's the low scores I see incessantly whinging - "ugh, how are other people actually enjoying the thing I'm not enjoying. What fools!" How miserable can ya get...

The album definitely deserves to float between it's 3.5-4 community average. I suppose You're in the wise minority who truly understands music, Doof.

That's a perfectly reasonable justification for finding a certain album/band boring.

@Casavir - True, that's a fair point. I cannot even begin to relate to it, and the idea that Deafheaven is merely an uninspired retreading of ground is a bit absurd to me, but it's a fair point. How do people ever manage to enjoy music again then? How often does something truly fresh even come out? I don't envy that experience at all.
@Hawks - I don't understand why You're being snarky with me. I was explicitly polite with You, mentioned that I wasn't talking about You, and enjoy threads I see You in. Your statements do not reflect You understand anything I said. I never claimed that *I* was the one who understood music better. "No it doesn’t cause Nemeton said so." Not even sure how to respond to this, as that's not at all reflective of how I feel. You do You I guess. Regardless, this band continues to be extremely polarizing clearly. I don't see this album falling below a 3.7 Community average.
@RevBranch - "Yeah I remember when I was 12 and learned how to string big words in sentences I didn't fully understand at the time." = "The emotional child's guide to dismissing people on the internet". I wasn't aware You're an author, Rev.
One of the most typical, smug internet responses there is. Bravo. I like the part where You completely substitute reason or demonstrating how apparently empty my posts were by condescendingly shrugging me off. Not substantiating anything You say is very impressive.

Things don't have to be entirely unique but you could like new material coming out that actually combines many prior elements in interesting ways like Locust Leaves' recent album (for example).

Cheers, I'll have to check that out. Checking Your ratings. Digging alot of Your tastes. That reminds me, it's been too long since I went on an extensive Prog jam. Think I'll spin some Mars Volta :D
