even when i was digging this a little more i always felt it was a little forced and trying too hard to do that "super sincere, brutally honest and self-deprecating pop punk/emo" thing. which causes it to feel a little insincere to me in the end.

It helps to understand the context of it being an album about the fear of being old and never achieving anything. The guys in this band have been doing this with a variety of different bands, they're all "old" comparative to a lot of new pop punk. This was their last grasp at doing anything meaningful in music and I feel that comes across very strongly in the lyrics. I think it feels a lot less try hard with that in mind.

agreed. the lyrics are so over-the-top, chock full of unoriginal sentiments and lacking in subtlety that they do actually feel insincere, like some kinda emo satire. but after 10+ spins in full (and plenty of repeated plays of individual tracks) i did get past those initial misgivings, in large part cuz the songwriting's pretty solid. and the nice thing about overzealous sincerity is that as long as you're eventually able to accept that the writer actually means everything that they're saying--no matter how cringey or cheesy or ridiculous--then you can empathise with them and enjoy the music. like just cuz i've heard basically everything in dylan's lyrics a billion times before doesn't mean that he's an idiot for getting worked up about it; part of the reason that his lyrics sound cliched is that he draws from pretty universal experiences.
