I guess you could put it that way, but k-pop would still be way better if the lyrics were better. okay yeah, appealing to 'emotions through sound alone' is still the most important part to me. Sailor Moon rules btw

Lyrics matter and they don't, and I think it depends on the type of music I'm listening to. For example, I love Kayo Dot/motw and Close to the Edge, both of which have basically nonsense lyrics, but they fit the music and are highly evocative, so they are awesome.
But I also appreciate the lyrics of something like Modest Mouse for exactly their lyrical content (among other things). Though it is also largely due to *how* they are delivered.
I guess the "lyrics don't matter" meme is because lyrics can't save a piece of music, but a piece of music can still be great without them.

yeah changed my mind this is pretty great...
still no fka twigs circa M3LL155X, which I still maintain mastered this style, but enjoyable nonetheless.

The only time I care about lyrics is when they're aggressively bad (see RATM) or like jump out at you as being particularly fun and/or clever (see mwY).

I sort of agree with that I think

The good thing about the lyrics on this is that they're all pretty good and important for each topic they go into, but they're also pretty inconsequential for the music due to the deliberately neutered pace they're delivered at, and the choppy way in which they're presented, thus wholly ignorable. Good balance between lyrics and musicality.

Alright, first listen I gave this a 2.5 because I had very mixed feelings. But definitely feeling giving this a bump now.

What does everyone think of the mixing/mastering on this thing? Sometimes it sounds so tinny and dry, the vocals in particular, that it kinda hurts. Don't know if it was a conscious decision, but it's really distracting sometimes

Seemed pretty conscious especially on the more robotic/dissonant tracks. I think it works exceedingly well on Faceshopping and Ponyboy in particular.

im not sold on sophie as an ambient artist or ballad writer, although "is it cold in the water" is a masterpiece and where this album draws from her earlier material its especially strong. i wish the singles didnt give away the first third of the album as well, but this is still one of the most exciting releases of the year so far.
