I gave this quite a few listens now, and it's very clear that the instruments are in position for a really good vocal performance to be honest.

The contrast of rather complex drumming and soft

uncomplicated singing reminds me of Saosin's s/t album.

Complements each other very well imo.

Are they still working with Will Yip? He was the only reason I like their last lp.

Yes Will Yip did this one as well. This album sounds great, especially the drums and bass.

Ok my final opinion after like 10 spins is that this is very similar to Keep You, but a noticeable step down. Could've been a bunch of B-sides from that album, with a few strong tracks (Fake Lightning, Blue). However the drumming is probably better than Keep You.

It might be a bit of a stretch on the comparison but after listening to David Haik's pace on the kit in the first two songs the album took on a Moving Mountains type feel. It was nice to be given a easily digestible Pianos album that I can play often without having to take a step back and re-evaluate my emotions. An unfortunate review from the staff for an otherwise fun and respectable album.

It's fine to dislike the review, but to dislike it per its opinion not agreeing with yours is kinda sorta baseless

So this sounds really pretty and it's really well produced, I just feel like it's missing the big moments and climaxes that Keep You had. I feel like this is the perfect sound for these guys, they just haven't quite figured out how to make it work perfectly yet. Still a good album.

Though I have no real opinion about how the review is written is does pretty accurately summise my issues with this record after a few listens. It all bleeds together so much and his singing, though not necessarily devoid of passion, is so monotonic at times.

Hoping it grows though as Keep You did to some extent.
