Haha, not saying it's good, or pleasant at all, but hey at least gives them character.

production is fucking awful

Album Rating: 3.0
there's low production value and then there's indifferent mixing. the first one can be cool but the latter really puts a wet blanket on things.

yeah I don't really see the bad production problem here...

Regarding the production, I've noticed it really depends on what I'm listening it using. If I use decent headphones, it's amazing. If I listen through my car speakers or the phone speakers, it's awful.
Saying that, even with the production, this has some of the best songs Summoning have made i.e. Mirklands and Herumor.
|

summoning has consistent great songs but the last AMAZING track by them was dragons of time on lugburz
|
| |
Oh come the fuck on how could anyone not love songs like Land of the Dead, Long Lost..., Elfstone. Those are amazing af.

i've tried this in flac on my akg k702's, my monitor bronze audio 2's driven by an onkyo a9010 amp, my audioengine a5+'s and my sony xba-h3's. it sounds awful on all of them.

The takeaway: Album is great. Sounds like shit.

I think I'm the only one here who doesn't have a huge problem with the production tbh.

I care at the beginning, but got used to it.

production is dense and muddy . its not like they are doing raw bm like stronghold and Minas Morgul days, Now they are aiming for high concept -movie score like compositions.
|
| |
exactly, it definitely seems deliberate

what i can't see being deliberate is the audible clipping, the fuzzing out in the mid-frequencies and the fatiguing highs and the difference in gain between tracks. the gain on tracks like the title track and siltertine is about twice the volume of mirklands and herumor for some reason.

It sounds a little bit over-compressed at times and dense so I get the issues with the production. You could notice the drums in Tar-Calion get noticeably pushed back in the mix when the guitars started for example. However I'm not overly fussed by the production since the compositions mainly make up for it as a whole and the denseness of it all somehow suits their style. However, hearing this with better production would probably have made it a much more enjoyable experience overall. I know it's bm and production shouldn't matter yadi-yada but I think this band is kind of going for a more majestic sound palette.

ironically i think production on bm really matters a lot. it doesn't take much for the purists to cry about how overproduced something can be, for example.
but yeah, this album sounds awful and i don't think the compositions make up for it all that much because it's basically the last album but not quite as good.

I see your point and I guess looking at it through that perspective you're bang on point. production mattering doesn't necessarily translate to it having to have crisp production value. I guess one way or another we always give a shit
I don't see it being that much of a show-stopper personally after an initial listen, but compared to other albums it's quite dense and ear-fatigue inducing.
on a completely different note, when can I be expecting some more Ethereal Shroud?
