they're cheapening what made those records great with piles upon piles of hulking mediocrities that only show they've lost their touch

of course, this is a total apples-to-oranges deal so w/e like what you like but there's a clear gap in quality between the first run and the revival (although i stick with Asunder being good)

But those records will always be those records. Even if they're wearing their formula to the bone it doesn't make them less of a legacy act. I still don't get it lol.

Yeah, I guess
never been a huge godspeed fan so I really don't have as much invested as others on the site or outside of here do, although there's a very obvious difference between the first three records and the three revival records
spoiler alert: they re-record all lights and break up for good

You don't like 'Allelujah! Don't Bend, Ascend!? I thought that was really solid. But I also enjoyed Asunder, so what do I know.

nah I like Allelujah and Asunder but again, there's just something missing from those records that make them so different from the earlier stuff, although it's more obvious on Asunder and this
honestly, I think these guys may be more suited to long-form compositions since the two albums where they kept it short ended up being their weakest critically

godspeed are one of my favorite bands but its long been established that f# and fists (zero kanada in there) are pillars of post rock that will stand alone and not be replicated again by gybe themselves or anyone else
in fact i havent even bothered to listen to this yet

I honestly believe they have another classic in them
They don't need to cut the drones out or anything, but they really gotta work them into their compositions better than this. Allelujah did it somewhat right and Asunder flat out just slapped them in the middle of the record (or song if you really wanna call it Behemoth still)

To put it shortly, they've become incredibly lazy with their songwriting

behemoth didnt have drones slapped in the middle of it. they were a fundamental part of the greater work i think.

I think this has def solidified itself as one of my fav albums by the band. Really wanna hear the vinyl I pre-ordered but knowing how the mail service works at my uni, I won't have it in my hands for another few days.

This is better than their last album but really boring. Other than Anthem Of No State, they've lost their stuff.

"This is Godspeed's third best album after Skinny Fists and F♯ A♯ ∞."

Not counting Slow Riot since it is an EP, I might agree. This is about even with Yanqui.

"This is about even with Yanqui." hell no

this seems really polarising. i think it could be their worst album. still ok though. just feels too small, like it needs another half an hour on the runtime.

it's possibly one of their simplest and least grandiose but I quite like it because of that. as jack says, it feels like the warmth before the 'end of the world' type landscapes depicted in F#A# and others. its just so so pleasant

Album Rating: 2.5
its definitely their most pleasant, so it certainly has its place. i just feel like it could go somewhere bigger. their last 3 albums have been pretty short, considering.

I like the briefness this has. Honestly their three 2010's records are around the same for me more or less. All their older stuff is clearly superior though, but they're obviously going in new directions now.
