Reading all the comments about how "you can barely hear the guitars in all the symphonic hodgepodge" and how "it drags on for too long" makes me chuckle on the inside as someone who listens to a lot of 19th and early 20th century classical stuff.
If anything, I'd love to hear this played by an actual orchestra. Because I'm not really satisfied with the sound either. Perhaps that's the only way to make it work as a record...

nah i don't think that'd work, time i with a real orchestra might work because it sounds like he wrote it around an orchestra but this doesn't really sound like it was really written with an orchestra in mind, just with keys to compliment the soundscape

"Just had a chance to listen to this, and it's a pretty fun record. Never really listened to too much of this band, but it reminds me of old Equilibrium, and sounds to me like a very competent folk metal record. Honestly not sure how someone who likes this style would hate this? I do wish a lot of those keyboard melodies were louder in the mix, there seems to be some really cool ideas going on that get buried in the mix."
As someone who adores this style I'll offer my own reasons for why this album doesn't do it for me. Most of the material on here is about as by the numbers as it gets. It's not unlistenable of course because Jari and co are competent musicians who know what they're doing, but there's no way a band this far into their career should be releasing something so bland, let alone something poorly produced. There are some really cool moments, particualrly in the latter half of the album, but they're few and far between. The rest just sounds like middle of the road everyday folk metal/melodeath and there's a whole host of acts doing this style much much better right now. These guys are starting to sound like all the bands that tried to sound like Ensiferum and Wintersun back when they were making some seriously adventurous folky symphonic stuff. So if you haven't heard much in this style this may sound new to you, but personally I find it it far from fresh. I don't hate this album, objectively it's about a 3 I believe, but nothing here really excited me as a fan.

nailed it. i cannot believe jari has gone back to using his viking metal back of tricks to substantiate a track. he's so much better than that now.

Right on Scuro, I'm pretty familiar with this style of bombastic folk metal, although it's not something I listen to much these days. I've never been a huge fan of this band and I personally think the self titled was a solid effort, but certainly nothing groundbreaking. For me they are both probably around a 3.5. I appreciate your insight regarding the music.

he can write good "majestic" music if he want's to.
he's less inspired and more whiny at this point

I think a lot of my problem with this is that I don't really dig this overly symphonic style folk metal. The debut was great for me because it had an original sound and didn't sound forced. This sounds like a giant bag of every folk metal cliche thrown together to me

Goddamn, I had no idea this was even released. I couldn't bear to follow Jari anymore I and just assumed it was never going to happen.

I don't remember any traces folk metal in the debut, unless you count the sitar parts as folk. They were beautiful.

So these guys just posted the isolated tracks from this album on Facebook and offered it to their fans to mix and master it themselves. lmfao
|
| |
Was that some sort of response to people's complaints or are they curious what people could do with it?
Also it sounds like there are 1000 tracks on each song. Mixing and mastering all of that would be overwhelming

Good lord this album sounds like its made of plastic in the worst kind of way. Being boring as all shit doesn't helps its cause either. Cool, their facebook fans can master it themselves (lmao!!!), doesn't make the actual music any better no matter how you fuckulate with its levels.

it's really not so bad so far, it just sounds flat and a little limp because of the production, kinda sucks the energy out of it. this sounds like a demo/album from another band from like 15 years ago trying to find their sound or somethin, not wintersun.
