It's currently killing it on Metacritic, so it's definitely acclaimed. I personally think it's one of the worst albums I've ever made it through though.

this isn't even bad. halfway through it and the only thing that separates this from his other music is overstuffed lyrical phrases that result in poor vocal delivery at times. productions is solid especially for something that was done studio live in 3 takes across the board. plenty of great songs. maybe i'll feel differently when I'm done but I'm no fanboy of his music and this really isn't as bad as people are saying.

It's probably his weakest work under the Father John Misty moniker but yeah I really don't see how it's that bad. I can understand why someone would give it a 2.5 or even a 2 but less than that is pushing it. The music is well enough put together and song for song, it's average at worst. I think a lot of people let their problems with him as a person cloud their perception of the actual music.

That's fine but does "boring" really equate "awful"?

Basically this^. I have no problems with him as a person and I really love his two prior albums. This is just shit. Long, drawn out, boring shit. Like the review says, you really gotta like his voice to like this. It's kinda like Anohni to me. Good voice, but wears out its novelty way too quickly (not trying to compare the two artists though, just trying to relate what I mean). Except all you're left with is a voice you're tired of and barely any music. I get it's ironic and it's this and that and all, but still, it's more than a chore to make it through.

you can be awfully bored, yes

Boring is much more offensive to me than an album that tries new things and comes out bad.

Well according to most users here I like boring music so I guess it's no surprise I don't have huge issues with this.

The album is a little bloated if you ask me but there are a few really good tracks that I'll definitely put on. Unfortunately Fear Fun and Honeybear were much more cohesive and this is not.
Standouts
"Pure Comedy"
"Total Entertainment Forever"
"Ballad of the Dying Man"
"The Memo"

Boney dude, his personality is obviously a part of his music but he is probably the least interesting person in indie, so his attempts at acting "smart" or snarky or whatever doesn't work because he has as much personality as a cardboard cut out. This also effects his music because it's just as dull as him.
I got no problems with him as a person besides being a douche sometimes, but he's just lame.
