Totally agree. What makes In Flames' collapse even worse is that there aren't really any other bands doing what In Flames used to do. There aren't really any modern equivalents to classics like their The Jester Race, Whoracle, Colony, or Clayman, because 'melodic death metal' bands have moved in a very different direction since then, ditching the NWOBHM influence. So those of us who loved that sound are left without an alternative.
And the thing is, I actually really liked Sounds of a Playground Fading. In terms of the style of alternative metal they were going for, that album was a really decent effort. So in my view, they've proven they *can* write good music in this style, they just aren't doing it anymore. What's changed? Well, Jesper left.
Depressing through and through.

It just seems terribly obvious Anders can't cut it anymore as the vocalist of the band they once were and they've been evolving their style to fit him, and it's not good.

this wasn't THAT bad, there were a handful of sweet riffs.
was just painfully dull and generic. Pretty horrendous drum mix too.

This is better than Siren Charms, and as some have echoed if this was a completely new band, I could dig this slightly more, but for the legacy In Flames built in the early years, it's depressing seeing how they've regressed in nearly every capacity on astronomical levels.

i think the 1.9 avg represents how being dull and generic and status quo and insipid etc etc doesn't equate a 2.5-3, especially when you consider their blatant devolution and how they now seem to be pandering to the wrong fan base

That makes sense JWT. Personally I try my best to listen to each album as a standalone piece of work and try to seperate it from their glory days since I'm pretty sure they have none of their original members.
also ASOP is way better than this imo, that album gets too much hate

The only motive that there ever was,
was to completely control a person,
a person that i found physically attractive,
and keep them with me as long as possible.
Even if it meant just keeping a part of them.

Is this really worse than Siren Charms? I really don't think i can bear the thought of that

I got into this band after buying Soundtrack to Your Escape on a whim in an f.y.e a long, long time ago. I still posit that there are some decent cuts on that album. Shortly after my purchase I started digging into their past discog and I was genuinely surprised by how different that material actually was. Colony became an instant favorite.
So, it's just... difficult to hear this band completely abandon their songwriting chops and regress into an ESL KoRn.
Fuck.

Honestly I'd say this album is a 1.1-1.2. It is barely saved from being as bad as Linkin Park thanks to some good guitar solos, but those can't possibly save an album full of cringingly generic mainstream alternative riffs and vocals from Anders that are so beneath him.
