The drum sound here isn't very good. Seems like they took a step back in that regard.

After the first album by these guys do you ever feel as if your listening to the same thing over and over again? That's kind of how I feel when I listen to these guys. I'll get into a few songs, but I can never make it through an entire album. Unless I'm playing it in the background. Don't get me wrong they're very talented musicians, but It gets monotonous after awhile.

This statement and instrumental metal go hand in hand imo

Not really, there's a variation in sound that becomes easier to pick up on when you've listened to this band/genre for so long.

I feel like that with some instrumental bands, but I think Animals as Leaders has done a great job making all their albums different. Compare CAFO to Physical Education for an example.

Matt's tuning makes it difficult to get a good mix.... he wants as little sustain as possible. The worst thing for someone trying to mix his drums. Even his cymbals are dry.

Matt's drums are the furthest thing from a flaw here

The drums and the snare especially sound great. Don't hear what would be a problem here.

AAL would be more consistently great if they'd just stop focusing so hard on technicality.

AAL are consistently great. They are getting better with each album.
I can see why people are saying the drums sound dry, the snare is a love it or hate it kind of sound. Kind of muted compared to the usual way a 'metal' album is mixed and almost mushy sounding with a seriously fast decay.
But I love the production here, its easily their most organic sounding.

This has great replay value, partly because there aren't any filler. Fuckin' love this band.

I find that tracks 5,7 and 8 are a little bit by-numbers for me, but that's fine as they are still well played songs. Everything else is top-notch
Ectogenesis and The Brain Dance are easily my favs here.

Meh... I think AAL kinda lost me after Weightless. That will most likely remain my favorite from them. Honestly, Meshuggah did a better job this year and took back their crown.
