According to wiki, Thordendal didn't write any of the music for this album? How do you have a guitarist ranked no. 35 out of 100 greatest metal guitarist by guitar world (thanks again wiki) and not have him write any songs?!

Not necessarily 'writing' the songs themselves doesn't mean he didn't contribute to them, from what I know (not much, based on a Loudwire interview) Haake is the/a main writer and makes like demos and then the band come together and do their thing.

Getting Catch 33 vibes from the t/t, this pleases me.

As someone who wouldn't really call themselves a 'fan' of Meshuggah's sound, this is straight-up awesome

I'm surprised about how positive the reception for this tbh, I expected people to like it more than Koloss but people calling it their 2nd maybe fav God damn.

All Meshuggah does but I didn't want them to go in this direction. Mixing more of their chaotic work with 'live' production isn't something I particularly wanted them to do but some stuff on here grooves hard.

"Mixing more of their chaotic work with 'live' production isn't something I particularly wanted them to do"
I dunno man if anything it solidifies how ahead of the game they are by showing that they don't need studio magic and can bust this shit out no problem like kings. like the stuff on here is easily some of their most chaotic material and they recorded it live? umm yes please

Pretty crazy how they can groove this hard and still sound like machines live.

But did they really need to prove this though? Alive showed they are as air tight as the hype believe to be and has production which is so much better here. In my opinion live and studio tendencies and thoughts for bands should be kept separate, they're different mediums of expression and things get lost in translation.

But this still sounds like a studio recording imo.

It does but the idea of a more 'live' sound his influenced their sound here.

I agree and that's partly why I think I enjoy this so much, it feels really alive. Also the production is top-notch.

I honestly feel like it was a subconscious idea brought on as a response to all the copy-cat djent bands, but who knows haha
