Era, Chrysalis, The Seventh Sojourn and Strange Brew are all incredible tracks.

Mikael Akerfeldt's voice shifts between the most soothing clean singing ever heard and the most menacing death metal growls this side of the threshold of hell.
|

akerfeldt is an excellent vocalist
|
| |
when he said death metal didnt inspire him any more and then proceeded to make uninspired, bland, overblown faux 70s revival prog, i was officially done with him. dude is a genius tho regardless

Album is all over the place, but like Mike said "I didn't want any two songs to sound alike" so yeah, good job there. There are some decent tracks here. I enjoyed Chrysalis (a very Opethian tune) and Era but others like the two Sorceress songs and a Fleeting Glance just made me want to press skip.

Had a nice listen outside with a beer and a little nicotin just now.
Sorceress is almost as beautiful as pale communion and heritage were but not quite the same level. I still feel this can grow on me as this was my fifth or so full listen to it.
Outstanding tracks are seventh sojourn and strange brew, although the singles are also really good, especially wilde flowers.
The track i cared least about is chrysalis so far.
The two bonus tracks and three live tracks are a nice addition, especially the great acoustic outbursts on the ward.

Seventh Sojourn is good, but they really should've fleshed it out into a more complete song. It serves more as an interlude. I did like the eastern pizzazz on that one.

Last 3ish minutes of Chrysalis rule though.

Chrysalis is top 3 minimum here, the whole of it, that is.

This is pretty good, I could see it maybe making its way to 3.5.
Good stuff but still boring and simple compared to what they used to be.

the last minute of The Seventh Sojourn is sublime. The vocal melodies are so gentle!

'characteristically eclectic' seems like it shouldnt be a compliment, especially paired with opeth

I mean by definition this new style is pretty eclectic sounding, especially songs like Famine, River, The Seventh Sojourn, and plenty of others. I think it adds a lot of character to their non-metal side.

This is definitely more adventurous than PC.
I'm not normally a 'production' guy but damn, it really is awful for Opeth's sound here.
