I enjoyed the record but I agree that it's not their most compelling work. It's an interesting journey across styles, but there isn't really anything memorable about any of the individual tracks. That said, it's a great record to turn on and zone out to. This is the kind of record I listen to on a flight.

there are versions of it that are separated into different tracks, a la Crimson II so you can jam it like a normal album.

Idk I really, really enjoyed it. Covers quite a lot of melodic dm ground. Some parts are more oldschoool, others like Insomnium is known for - more atmospheric and melancholic.

Solid and rather diverse I'd say. Probably won't change your take on the band, but for fans this is almost essential. I've been listening to these guys a lot lately and this was better than I expected.

Yeah man. Winter's Gate definitely made this long time fan happy. Best since ATWW.

Forgot this was coming out because I was too busy jamming to Witherscape the past two months and new music has been put on the back burner.

I doubt you'll be disappointed. Although the single track nature makes me less likely to spin this on a whim but right now it hits the sport

I've got like 4 different melodies from this stuck in my head that I keep humming to myself. So it's very memorable for me.

I really like how several of the melodies show up, leave, then come back a few minutes later but slightly different. Feels really cohesive.

Feels really cohesive. [2]

Honestly it's one of the most cohesive sounding concept albums I've ever heard. I wouldn't say that they played it safe per say, but they definitely had a focused idea going into it that is very well molded around.

"Out of the darkness! Out of the cold!

Out of the night, they have come!

Cruel is the laughter! Cruel is the fate!

Cruel is the winter's will!"

"...Sing a quiet song to me

Sing of spring and sing of sea

Sing a silent song to me

Sing of home and sing of sleep..."

Bringing the feels hard.

Their 2nd best for sure I think. Might slip up to no. 1 even and surpass Weeping World.
