there's something about their sound that make them sound too similar to much other generic metal bands out there. im especially thinking of the bass drum sound

I know what you mean. I listened to a few tracks off this a few days ago and thought the same thing. Not that I wish they were different, but that they really have that typical modern sound.

I think the instruments sound great apart from the bass drum and the bass. I think production sounds rich and has depth, unlike a lot of modern bands that have overly compressed and flat sounding production.

This is pretty much Matheos' modern guitar tone

I think some of the acoustic sections like the one in Light and Shade have an 80s metal feel, which I found pretty cool

I think for a traditional progressive metal band, they need all the help they can get to appeal to the modern metal fan. If they can do what they want musically and compromise with a sound that might attract the mainstream crowd, I say that's a good trade-off.

I agree with you. And that's actually what attracted me to this album the most among the rest of FW's discography.

I found a high definition recording of the whole show on Youtube. Definitely worth watching. It's pretty cool that both eras of the band seem to be able to peacefully co-exist, plus the Arch/Matheos off-shoot which is essentially the current Fates line-up but with the old Fates singer.
