with just about anything other than grassroots indie band you have to get credit to more people than just the band or artist on the cover of the album, a lot of people go into making the final product

if she didnt have vocal talent there would be nothing

On first listen through,

so far the TT, the Lil Wayne song, and Everyday are the hot ish. The quality of the album dips from Side To Side to Leave Me Lonely

Or maybe there's just been an upswing in the quality of mainstream pop / rnb in the last five years.

Yeah exactly, this seems to be what the "but x doesn't even play an instrument!/They don't write their own songs how are they musicians!" people don't understand. Just because they're not single-handedly created by one person doesn't make the finished product any less enjoyable.

Agree that the quality dips after Side To Side, but those first 5 tracks alone make this a pretty worthy listen either way. Also can't tell if the features on this thing are tasteful or underwhelming, leaning towards tasteful though. Just imagining what she could do if she was able to be a little more independent from the mainstream music trends.

Seems like every big pop/rnb/hip hop release that has come out for the past year (feels like) has either had a Weeknd and/or Future feature. It's gotten to the point where I am honestly surprised if neither of them pop up on some of these albums anymore.

Is it not a bit fruitless rating an album like this when theres a good chance Ariana didn't even write any of the lyrics/vocal hooks/music herself?

Yeah ofcource but I meant attributing the quality of the album to her. How canwe judge her proficiency as an artist by work which isn't entirely hers

You're rating the album, not her proficiency as an artist
