"these guys have never been able convey any sort of emotion apart from a few cuts on awake"
Scenes had quite a few of those too.

"4 to 5 spins is roughly ten hours. If you need ten hours to appreciate the album then its clear you merely have Stockholm syndrome."

In what world is ten hours a long time to fully appreciate an album? Anything with a degree of complexity requires time.

"these guys have never been able convey any sort of emotion apart from a few cuts on awake"

A Change of Seasons... all of SFAM... SDOIT... Octavarium... I mean, if you don't like the band to begin with it'll never resonate, but to make a statement like that is a bit obtuse.

Some albums need years to appreciate. And then there's magic. What's the difference in listening 4 times The Astonishing and listening to Bilateral 8 or 9 in order to appreciate it? Now it's one of my favourite ones. It's not a matter of time, really, it's what the listener is ready to accept and how much the music is ready to reveal. Duration is merely another factor in the equation. Of course it plays a role here, but I mostly believe the listeners' difficulty in understanding the album is their expectations and not the album itself.

Trust me, I'm like one of the biggest dt fans around. I've seen them almost every time they pop into my country to play. And the first listen is far more important than the tenth. If the album is great, you know from that first listen that something is different. First time I heard SFAM, I was moved by it. I didn't fully appreciate it for years, but I knew from the beginning that it was in a different realm altogether.

With The Astonishing, it loses marks for its sheer size. Except this isn't a case of the Titanic, being oversized and worth it (icebergs be damned) this is a case of the Great Eastern, overly confused and doomed to mediocrity.

There are parts of this album that I really like, except they are too far apart to appreciate and the whole album suffers as a result. Another example for me is Enless Forms Most Beautiful, which has some amazing bits coupled with parts that could really be cut out and nothing would be lost.

You could easily cut an hour from this record, and it would have scored much higher in my opinion. And seriously, Lord Nefarious? At least try.

@Hoppoman ''Trust me'', yeah, like I've never listened to music, progressive or not, and cannot think realistically about evaluating an album...

No, but seriously, I get what you want to say. First impression is important on some level. But you tend to view people as static, with no change in their psyche, emotions and likes. People change, their preferences change. One might adore an album now and detest it a year later or the other way around.

Oh I know, I was actually directing anything at you by the by, just a general statement.

I never really truly enjoyed Train of Thought until I left my emotionally abusive girlfriend. I suddenly began to understand the anger behind it. That's also when I picked up my taste for black metal...... But that's a different story. Many of the albums I loved ten years ago, I wouldn't enjoy them as much now. Except, having listened to the Astonishing a few times already, the whole thing seems to scream "I'm trying really hard."

Haken isn't worthy of licking the sweat off of DT's balls......band has a few good moments on each of their records and that is it

Visions is probably their best song. It's really epic. Their forth one is out this year. I'd really try the Mountain though, it's brilliant.
