Really don't understand the almost universal opinion on this. Just don't see the drop in quality that Coldplay has supposedly had with this and Ghost Stories. I mean, I understand that they've gone more into pop territory than rock with the last few albums, but I don't see that as a bad thing? If anything, I feel like they've realised that's what they're good at and they're playing to their strengths more.
Ghost Stories was legit among my favourite albums of last year. And this album seems like a solid, mid-tier Coldplay album, which is still pretty good.
The title track, Birds, Everglow, AOAL, Fun, Army of One are all great songs IMO. And don't think there's really any clunkers on the album like there was with Mylo Xyloto.
Actually, this album feels like a slightly better realised version of MX. A more confident MX with a bit of the fat trimmed.

@sadsquid. Bird, Everglow and Hymn for the Weekend are the biggest "clunkers" of this year. But to each his own.

Maybe they should have called it quits after Viva la Vida, which was very good. The one after had it moments but they just seem to have lost so much oomph since Viva la vida. 'Safe' music to put on without running the risk of frightening or offending anyone.
But then if they're making vast amounts of money, then why stop?

Honestly, this really isn't that bad. Surely their weakest, but nothing that screams "AWFUL". Review is solid, although I could swear Chris Martin slept with your girlfriend judging by the bitterness conveyed.

Seven years of build up resentment over their creative direction tend to leave me a bit bitter. Also I thought it would make for an entertaining review.

Ah. You see, I actually really enjoy Mylo more than some of their earlier work (X&Y and some of the EPs), so I feel less "betrayed" and more "slightly miffed".

What a surprise, more drones acting like X & Y sucked and Viva la Vida was a masterpiece.

What a surprise an edgelord on sputnik.

I'm not being an edgelord, I'm simply bringing to light yet another fad opinion that has developed on this site.

I dunno, this opinion is widely held among the music community as far as I can see. That doesn't make it correct, but I don't see how it developed on sputnik. (X and Y is a good album in my book, albeit worse than it's predecessors and Viva la Vida)

X&Y is one of their worst. Definitely worse than Mylo and Ghost Stories.

Ironically, Fix You may be the best track they've ever written.

sadsquid's little write-up actually makes me want to hear the record in full
|
| |
my first impression of Fix You as a 14-year-old hearing the album for the first time was "Coldplay by numbers" & that impression's pretty much stuck with me since
not as bad an offender in that department as "Speed of Sound" though, i guess
