besides its not like singing about a 'sociopathic mancunian' is somehow infinitely more ambitious than singing about any other kind of sociopath, u just happen to relate to it. hardly criteria for 'most ambitious music of the year' especially when the music itself is pretty standard modern alt pop whatever

Wolf are you going to tell me it's no longer a genuine medical term

Potsy it's a strange career move for a relatively mainstream chart indie act to sing lyrics detailing some sort of fever dream about murdering the queen with lines like 'just an animal thing, limp as a doily flapping blood in the wings'. I find the album really strange but as you say I don't listen to too much music. Album stood out for me lol

honestly think "ambitious" is a bit of a vague descriptor for an album.

ambitious in what way? how does this ambition take form musically?

no, I'm just implying because you don't like someone or because he's a dickhead doesn't mean he's sociopathic.

i think he thinks its ambitious because of the lyrics (which i disagree with hard) but even if they were like man i read over that shit and a lot of it was typical "oh babe oh girl oh babe girl burn down the straights babe oh girl" ambiguous nonsense anyway.

Wolf it's ambitious as a musical and career direction compared to the last album (think inoffensive Coldplay textures), musically it may have outpaced their abilities to play the music live tbh (they struggle) and lyrically it's like nothing else in the mainstream as far as I can tell. Despite his conspiracy theory/dystopian political angle Matt Bellamy would be terrified of singing some of these lyrics

Matt Bellamy would be afraid to sing a lot of stuff even if it was only slight below competent tbh

"lyrically it's like nothing else in the mainstream as far as I can tell."

its like the lyrics for anything trendy in the indie rock mainstream. alt-j. foals. whatever. the subject matter doesn't even matter when u look at the superficiality of how they are put together.

"So you think there’s no meaning
In anything that we do?
Maybe it's the silence
Maybe it's the war"

"Baby can you leave it in the (distant past)?
Baby can you leave it in the (distant past)?
Girl, I'm from the very very (distant past)
Girl, I'm from the very very (distant past)
Baby can you leave me in the (distant past)?
Baby can you leave me in the (distant past)?
Girl, I wanna take you to the (distant past)
Girl, I wanna take you to the (distant past)"

"
But did you imagine it
In a different way?
Did you imagine it
(But did you imagine it)
In a different way?
Did you think that everything
Everything would change?
Did you imagine it
In a different way?

Regret! Regret!"

yeah. no.

also the idea that the criteria for 'ambitious album of the year' is completely personal and isolated to the bands own career is hilarious. so because it is ambitious as fuck for them because their last album was just a coldplay record this somehow makes it ambitious compared to the entire greater picture of 2015 music? the fuck?>?

lol, there are death metal lyrics that are more interesting than that. and I'm not a person that is generally huge on lyrics.

"'just an animal thing, limp as a doily flapping blood in the wings'"

i'll admit that line is pretty awesome and funny but the vast majority of the lyrics on that album are pretty cliche even if the subject matter u have to dig for is relatively dark for their ilk.

The album's main theme is indoctrination/terrorism but the lyrics aren't spelt out all the time

yeah well u dont get bonus points for controversial topics if the way u sing about them is lame as balls. like i said. the vast majority of the lyrics are amateur hour as fuck.

I think they do a good job with mixing indie pop bullshit with the more critical modern day societal fears spin on the songwriting tbh. I think they find a perfect spot for accessibility while still maintaining an interesting narrative (and one could probably argue that theres irony in the generic "oh baby" chorus on Distant Past or something) that doesn't devolve into unbearable incompetent drabble or 2smart4me commentary.

Thats just me though.
