Well holy shit. 1/3 of the album? Incorrect.
Hey, thanks for welcoming me fondly...
Anyway, I said that 3 songs are turds. I'm not too good at math, but 3/15 is not 1/3. Pretty sure it's 1/5. While that's an asshole-esque response, I'll dial it down.
Look, gentlemen and ladies, I don't dislike a lot of this album. It's great. I gave it a perfect score because of it's potential. It's been out for almost 2 months now and I still have yet to listen to it in depth. I have a semi-developed view of this album. This rating is subject to change, but I want to keep it that way until I have a firm idea of what I feel this album is worth rating.
I also rated this album a 5 because of my prior experiences with The Dear Hunter, thus explaining why I put it at a high starting rating. (Almost) all of their other material is fantastic, so I expected nothing less from this album.
Look, I know people are defensive and harsh over music, but I love these guys. I would feel bad giving them anything less than a 4 because they're great. I came here looking to see what others had to say about my favorite band and album, but I got blasted apart right away.
Also, aircycle, the end of The Old Haunt (before the Lake and the River reference) sounds like a really bad One Republic cover. It's really poppy, lyrics became lackluster, and almost all musicality disappeared.

The climax of The Old Haunt is what makes the song for me tbh

@JuliusPringle you were very negative about most of the album. Waaaay more than just 3 songs. You slagged it off so much that your track-by-track analysis read like a 2.5-3.0 rating. Read back what you said and you surely can imagine how people would be confused at you giving anywhere close to a 5.0 rating after saying so many negative things about so many of the songs.
But regardless, you hardly got blasted for what you said. You had a couple of confused responses (not even agressive or unfriendly, just confused) from people who perhaps wanted more explanation of your thoughts... and you went on the defensive almost immediately.
Relax and enjoy the casual conversation.

Here are extracts of all the negative things you said:
The Old Haunt- "...this song goes bad real fast"
Waves- "...extremely overrated..."
Remembered- "...I rarely listen to it."
A Night on the Town- "...pretty much stopped listening to it..."
Is There Anybody Here?- "...also overrated..."
The Bitter Suite IV and V- "A little disappointed in the part where Casey sings, "Don't you tread too close to the line this time", though. Nick, the drummer, could've made something more of that section instead of a simple bass-snare-high hat all on the same beat thing."
The Bitter Suite VI- "Terrible. Very boring and anticlimactic."
King of Swords- "...overrated..."
If All Goes Well- "Worst song on the album. Just made for filler..."
The Line- "2nd worst. Boring and goes nowhere."
Wait- "...weird and out of place. Doesn't really fit."
You were negative (sometimes extremely so) about 11 of the 15 songs dude. Can you really blame people for being a little confused?

It is indeed, but it also lacks replay value IMO (over the long-term, at least). This is one of my stronger 4's, definitely in the top 10 discussion for the year. This has a few duds, but for the most part it is consistent and remarkably fun over its long span.

The Lake and The River is still my favorite Dear Hunter song, but I think either Waves or Night On The Town might be a close second.

Man, I jam this track allllll the time and it has never lost replay value to me.

Definitely a top 10 contender. Probably my #1 right now. I may even 5 this - I am still really enjoying it nearly every day.

It's definitely a fun track I'll give it that. Even my wife who typically hates my music loves this album.

About once a year I'll get her into something decent. Or in the case of TDAG, it took years.
