As far as prog is concerned, this album and Synchestra are probably the two best albums released this year so far.

I listened to the album a good 9 or 10 times before writing the review.
Okay.
Tool often fall foul of bad songwriting. That's true of Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus, AND 10,000 Days.
Give some direct examples. I'm interested (in an honest manner) in what you consider to be bad songwriting.
And you know what? You've got things completely wrong. Repeated listens do nothing but reveal Tool's flaws. If I'd reviewed this on first listen, it would have got a higher rating. Easily. But I listened more and realised that - hey! - it's not as good as I thought it was first time out. Same thing happened with Lateralus. And you know, if I was reviewing this now, it'd struggle to get that 3.5.
That's completely subjective. Most people that like Tool will tell you that it took them more than a few listens before they "got it". So, if you're going to say your opinion is correct and that my opinion is wrong, take into consideration the general consensus of the band.
And if you seriously think this is complex, please broaden your horizons. The only reason most people fellate Tool so much is because they have no context. As far as prog rock bands go, they're good, but the only thing they've ever done that was special was get to #1 in the charts. Once you've got to grips with some music that's truly challenging, Tool is a piece of cake.
How is their music not complex? You said yourself that you don't like "Rosetta Stoned". Did you ever wonder why? And trust me, it's not because you don't understand why the song is humorous.
In fact, I would love for you to tell me some truly complex modern music out there that causes you to be so pretentious.

But many Tool fans transitioned from uncomplex mainstream rock to Tool. So no wonder they found Tool hard to understand at first. If you listened to something like Billy Bragg's Back to Basics (which I enjoy more with every listen) then listened to 10,000 days, you'd find 10,000 days pretty easy to 'get' straight away.
I'm with Iai, in that repeated listens did not reveal more, but revealed shortcomings. The only Tool album that didn't do that for me, was Lateralus, which I pretty much disliked from the get-go.
I'll give this review a thumbs up, and out of all of the reviews I agree with it the most. Although I agree with Med in parts too. This Message Edited On 05.25.06

Right and it was Aenima that got the band big, so there's been two albums since and they've both gotten the same kind of reaction. Surely, an experienced Tool fan would've been able to digest any new material pretty quickly.

I also agreed with the revieww 100 % Chancellor absolutely shines on this album. Also I read in a post somwhere that Viginti tres followed by Wings pt. 1 were supposed to be played simultaneously with Wings pt.2 to from one big track. You'll notice that part 2 is the same length as viginti tres and Part 1 combined. Seems to add a bit more meaning to viginti tres making a more significant filler

Its a good album, some songs (lost keys and viginti trees) are very progressive in their nature but I can;t help but think they are simply filler.

I think Lost Keys has its use, but Viginti Tres is filler. Kinda' makes you wonder how they only wrote 7 songs in 5 years, doesn't it?
I actually came back to apologize to Iai and anyone else if I lashed out at them or anything like that. I don't agree at all with the review, but that's your opinion and I shouldn't criticize you for it. I just didn't feel Iai did a good job at all reviewing the album. He passes Rosetta Stoned off as just Third Eye-part two and he thinks Right in Two is against the idea of free will. This makes me feel that he didn't listen to the album nearly enough because he sounds so misinformed.

It took them 6 months to a year to write 7 songs, not 5. Tool are not a band that will start writing another album right after the last.
Still a small amount of material for that space of time, but this album wasnt made in 5 years like people seem to think

I agree with YouGottaBeCrazy, Lost Keys is helpful. It sets the mood for Rosetta Stoned well. Whenever I'm going to listen to Rosetta Stoned, I listen to Lost Keys first.

Yeah, it pisses me off when people start saying "7 songs in 5 years, wtf!" As it's simply just not true.

Overrated album. Vicarious is pretty good, but the rest is average. I hardly listen to it anymore.

They maybe filler but I agree its sets an excellent mood for the album. The album as a whole has a very dark and mysterious mood that Tool can do so well. This Message Edited On 05.30.06

The only filler I can tolerate is Lost Keys. Lipan Conjuring is absolute trash.

If i listen to Rosseta Stoned im gonna have to listen to Lost Keys as well just because its such a chill amazing intro. I think Wings (parts 1 and 2) are more filler than Lost Keys
