the review barely even talked about the music.... basically just a lyrical focus. which i guess makes sense since the music here is bland and uninspired.

lyrics are like the least important thing in music. the actual, y'know, music is what matters. lyrics are peripheral.

You can make a case for the music being bland, but saying it is uninspired is just dumb.

Guys, poems are awful. The worst thing. They hold no meaning. Why the fuck do people even write poems?

this album pretty much proves 'jan should be a poet instead of a musician

my contention here is that music is about the music and the lyrics are peripheral. good lyrics don't excuse a boring piece of music from being musically bland.

But you're wrong

The music is soft, not bland

the music is completely lacking in dynamic contrast, is rhythmically rudimentary, and melodically doesn't really do anything that hasn't been done by 8000 folk artists beforehand. sufjan doesn't use his voice in an interesting way, instead opting to drone on in a wispy thin emotionless near-falsetto for the entire album.

sounds pretty bland to me.

plus saying "it's soft" is a pretty fucking useless defense

Minimalism doesn't mean boring. It can be elegantly crafted, like it is here.

You don't always need screeching and pounding.

So, what, in your opinion, should a folk artist do? Not do folk anymore?
