the approach to the guitar work here is mostly nothing like J/OLG. really
Sovereign, Quiet Down, and Always Begin sound like they couldve been on BSN or Appendage more than anything else.
the rest is either VW sounding or slightly different for them

Never really been too into progressive stuff in general, but I recently finally opened my eyes and detached from my social conditioned tastes to get a whiff of the real stuff.
I've known Circa for a couple years now because I was a huge Saosin fan, but I never really fully dove into their material. Recently coming in contact with this album (thanks to Sputnik), I feel like I'm finally appreciating this band for what it is. Personally I get an unique enjoyment out of songs like "Only The Sun" that I haven't really felt much of as of late.
Now I feel like it's time to go back and listen to their previous work with a more open mind. I always knew this band was talented but really couldn't grasp their vibe. Anchoring down my socially conditioned tastes to enjoy this piece of art. Thank you.

Anyone else having a really hard time getting into this? I loved Blue Sky Noise but haven't been able to really get into any other Circa album.

This is really good. I like it more the Violent Waves. Though doesn't pack the punch Blue Sky Noise does. It probably ranks 3rd or 4th on their discography for me. But there are some real highlights here. Phantom is incredible.
This is definitely a grower though.

I'll always be a bigger fan of the Juturna/On Letting Go-era Circa. Those albums hold a lot of nostalgia for me. I don't really hear any of that style here. In your opinion, what songs sound like the first two albums? I don't really hear it, especially in the guitar style. Solid album though, better than Violent Waves in my opinion.

None of the songs here sound entirely like their older albums. But there are plenty of verses, breakdowns, etc. that are reminiscent of their past work in my opinion. "Quiet Down" and to a lesser degree "Always Begin" give off plenty of 'On Letting Go' vibes. A few small sections like the breakdown in "Schema" feel like something that could have been on 'Juturna'. But like I said, I don't think this album is redundant in comparison to any of their past work. It just blends together familiar elements while maintaining it's own identity.

Yea. After more listens, letting it sink in, I'm really starting to dig it.

Its been difficult for me to pay too much attention to Circa Survive since Juturna and On Letting Go. But this definitely has something going for it.
