You wouldn't take this round to your gf's parents house to show off, that's for sure.

Someone remaster this pls

I'd like this a lot more if the production didn't sound like slamming cookie sheets together. We're well past the point where any album shouldn't have a perfectly neutral frequency reproduction and high-frequency extension to 20 kHz.
It doesn't matter how good the music is if it's literally painful to listen to.

Exactly, I always listen to my music at higher than normal volumes, so the fact that I'm complaining about the loudness on this says something

It's not particularly bad, but not great either. There's a couple of highlights. And yeah, Raskulinecz' production aesthetic is too fierce and evidently distorted in sections. He wouldn't have been my first choice that's for sure.

this is a unique album, i liked the hunter but it was a tad dumbed down. this is more unpredictable. high road has a great main riff and ozzy osbourne-like chorus. Diamond in the witch house is definitely the best song on here though

High Road is quite terrible. It uses that awful riff probably 2/3 of all metal bands have come to exploit at some point in their history.

What riff would that be?

Album's great (as in a 3.5+), but inferior when compared to its predecessor (a 4+).
Mastodon are closer than ever to a dead end, regarding the evolution of their style, but that's for the band to worry, not the fans.

That riff has been exploited by probably 2/3 of all metal bands because it's an awesome metal riff.

Not really the riff that's the problem with High Road, it's the vocals.

28 minutes in. I like it. It's much more commercial than their previous work for sure.
Would like to hear Diamond In The Witch House, since Scott Kelly's a guest vocalist on that track.

This sounds like music some kid would put on his youtube video of dirtbike race highlights
