I said not THAT prominent, there are similarities but you act like Lord Mantis is just a shitty rip-off and that simply isn't true. "fanboy 4.5'd" so every 4.5 on earth is a fanboy 4.5

fans of this need to remember that TODAY IS THE DAY IS A BAND

Uhh, why? The similarities aren't that prominent

Gonna have to agree with Wolfe hard on this one, never thought of it until he brought this up and I'm a huge fan of Today is the Day. He didn't have to be an ass though! Save that for the Agalloch forum.

Today is the Day is a classic band and I love them to death, and this is definitely influenced by Steve Austin as a whole, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a direct copy or anything. I hear a lot of 90s sludge in this record, including Crowbar, early Neurosis, Eyehategod, Grief and Noothgrush.

not sure I would single any one of them out as the main influence here.

also Wolfe i respect your knowledge of sludge more than any other (hell, got me into a good portion of the genre directly), so I definitely second the notion that more people need to jam Today is the Day (they seem to be a forgotten band around here as far as that sound goes).

but speaking of unappreciated sludge in this thread... Thou's newest record, anyone?

"Cry in a fucking corner. You know nothing about Profound Lore because this isn't the first time
they've run into trouble with controversial albums. Plus, it's art and if it offends people, don't
look at it or don't buy it. Very simple, end of conversation, you have absolute backwards logic.
There is far worse shit out there."

Sure, there's worse shit out there. Doesn't make this okay. Labeling it as art doesn't make its
creator immune to criticism, nor does it make it incapable of conveying or promoting a sentiment.

Whatever the intent or "message" was, Wizard, the band and label realised that it offended people -
not in a "eww, that's nasty" kind of way, but that a lot of people perceived it to be endorsing hate
and violence. There is a massive difference between depicting something, like, say, death metal or
horror does, and actively endorsing/promoting it. Profound Lore and Lord Mantis realised that's what
people took it to be - so intent aside, it would inevitably lead to the same negative effects (if
any, right). So they entered into talks about changing it, understanding what they would effectively
be promoting if they chose not to do so. There was a clear choice there, but they decided to release
what people were perceiving as... this hateful thing, anyway, and that's the problem here for me.

Yeah, I know I was a bit of a dick bringing the whole thing up unsolicited, sorry - and it also
wasn't the most eloquent censure. I'd jsut gotten home after quite a bit of wine, and had been
speaking to a friend of mine involved in LGBT* work about the album art, when I saw the review on
the home page. Still stand by what I said though, by understanding public perception and having
discussions/the opportunity to change it, and refusing, thy're effectively promoting that
perception, regardless of intent.

Curse.

Taking down art because people perceive it the wrong way is stupid. Charlie Fell explained the artwork, if people want to continue getting offended by it for the wrong reasons then that is their problem.
