Quite simply, the atmosphere. There are tons of genres out there are the really into for the

atmosphere, not guitar melodies, not lyrics, and definitely not the vocals. The mumbling is done on

purpose. The vocals aren't supposed to be the forefront, you don't even need to know what the vocals

say. They too, are part of the atmosphere.



If I was a year younger, I would easily agree with you in that this would be boring, but now that

I'm much more accustomed to music like this, I find this very very enjoyable.



It is also notably for revolutionizing a genre: new wave/post punk. It might not seem all that

impressive these days, which is understandable considering it's been 30 years, but it was very much

so back then.
