@Ars: I can't stand 'The Bends', the worst track Bungle's ever done. I wish I could find that thread where I had that discussion with Poly because it was a good one and fully explained why I didn't like this album no where as much as other people.

If you have a fleshed out argument Calc, I can respect that. Most people don't.

@Calc: I never really thought of "The Bends" as a conventional song. If I did that, I'd probably hate it too, but for me, it's

more of an interest sound art piece?

@deathschool: The death metal type growling screams kind of kill it for me (always hated that shit...) ... plus the second

half where of it was just kind of meh...

Whole song is awesome. That is far from the only time Patton has done growling, dude.

Other times (Like in "Egg") it's usually minimal enough to where it doesn't make a huge indent in the song.

Same with Faith No More songs like "Surprise! You're Dead!", it's minute.

With "Merry Go Bye Bye", he just goes all out though for a while. It really puts a damper on the song for me.

Merry Go Bye Bye rules hard. Perhaps you have to be a death/black metal fanatic like me to really "get" the song though.

No way. I'm definitely not and it fucking kills.

Personally, I like my Patton screaming to be more like "Jizzlobber", "Caffeine", "Ugly in the Morning", "Love is a Fist" etc.

Patton's vocals can do no wrong. Preference is menial.

Then how can you hate on Bye Bye? I mean I know you just explain but seriously, it's no more or less

obnoxious than the rest of the album so really I fail to see your argument.

"it's no more or less obnoxious than the rest of the album"

Dude, obnoxiousness has nothing to do with it. I love when it's obnoxious and/or serious.

It's just the fact that a huge portion of "Merry Go Bye Bye" is just straight up growling and that stuff turns me off. The music in it is great though.

@deathschool: Found it, this is what I posted to Poly:

"Despite the album's ambition and awesome ideas the execution is mostly frustrating to listen to. Lots of segments on IMO 8 songs on this seem to have no purpose to the song or drag on needlessly, it lingering in its own weirdness. Yes the songs are incredibly odd and original but it simply doesn't sound interesting to listen to and ultimately isn’t cohesive (unlike their other 2 LP's). By far the worst example of this album's wasted potential is 'The Bends' which has a brilliant concept (i.e. the musical equivalent of going further into the depths unknown in a submarine) but it's so boring and disjointed. There's no tension present thought the song and no segment links into each other to create a cohesive journey. Coupling with the pointless fade in/outs makes this seem they just got 9 segments and pasted them together with none of them benefiting the other. Couple this with the song length and you have the song that almost kills the album for me.

To why I rated this album a 3 is because despite its flaws, its ambition is still to be praised due to how original this is, the songs flow seemly together and it feels like they truly thought about how the songs co-exist with each other. In addition some of the these songs work wonderfully, with my personal highlight being 'Violenza Domestica' where despite it being so odd, it's extremely compelling due to its distortion of Mafia like themes and every segment has extremely well done with ruthless pace and style which other songs sorely lack."

Alright Ars, well maybe you just need to listen to more Cannibal Corpse then ;]

"Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz" is still my favorite on here. I mean come on guys it's so perfect.

@Judio!: There's more wrong with Cannibal Corpse than just ugly as hell growling... I won't even go into that.

"@Calc: I never really thought of "The Bends" are a conventional song. If I did that, I'd probably hate it too, but for me, it's more of an interest sound art piece?"

But what is 'conventional song' to you is maybe completely different to someone else. I don't have a set criteria, if I like it I like it and if I don't I give reasons for it, simple. Don't assume I don't like it because I don't use a certain criteria that it 'should' do.

@Calc: I guess to me, a conventional song has something to hold it together as one thing even if the

melody/harmony/overall theme is loose as hell.

"The Bends" is like a collection of sounds that go in and out. I don't know, it's just nice to hear it every now and then.

@Judio!: Ah.

Main reason why I really don't like it at all really, I want something conventional by your definition.

Poly reporting in

@Calc still a shame you don't like The Bends, it's certainly not a tangible song or one that'd work out of the context of this album

but within this album it totally works imo

its noodliness and sense of uncertainty adds to the nightmarish feel of the album for me

I know the segments of songs you mean that could be considered 'dead air', but I think of it as Bungle painting with negative space
