for me, what made xxx so fantastic is the quality of the wordplay and the absolutely insane number of cultural references he crammed into verses that still sounded on-point. even a track like "bruiser brigade" (which i love) is cleverly handled despite obviously being far from dealing with thought-provoking subject matter. there just isn't the same level of technicality to his rhymes here, nor is he as stunningly entertaining. i understand that those things weren't the point of the album this time around, and i recognize that much of the color of this album is contributed by the production rather than lyrical fireworks (very much on purpose as i understand it from reading danny talk about the album). but knowing the standard by which danny brown constructed the album doesn't change the one by which i judge it. i think this album is a success in that it is an excellent realization of danny's aspirations for it, i just think his approach on xxx was closer to what i'm looking for.
and for the record, this is still awesome.
