Album Rating: 3.5
I doubt it will be that high. It's not a Sputnik album. I'd say 3.9 is the highest.

never heard karnivool. where should i start?

Not here. Probably Themata, then move on to Sound Awake. They are both very different albums, so you may like one and not the other.

yeah, I'd say just go in order of their release. Themata is the easiest to get into, then Sound Awake, then this last if you're digging them.

If I could change the average ratings of the Karnivool albums I'd make them:
Themata - 3.6
Sound Awake - 4.7
Asymmetry - 4.0
Shame Karnivool had such an album to follow up, I almost feel as if the average rating might be higher had this been released in '09 instead of Sound Awake because a lot of people are straight up comparing this to Sound Awake when it's nothing like it.
|
| |
And I almost feel as if people just don't like the way this record sounds.

"Sound Awake - 4.7"
Okay c'mon now that's a bit much

[2] I mean, I 5'd Sound Awake but it''s average shouldn't be that high. Definitely a 4.3 tho.

It's fair to compare this to the previous album because it's the same damn artist. That's what people do.
Sound Awake is incredible.
Asymmetry is incredibly bland.
Whoever said this sounds like a very forced change in sound nailed it on the head. Sound Awake always sounds like a natural progression from Themata. From SA to this... not at all

Those new averages are obviously what I personally rate the albums, not what I expect Sputnik to rate them for a new average.
I've got Sound Awake at 4.5, because I rounded it down. It's still one of my favourite albums, very clear and cohesive but also very well written and intelligent.

If it's as bland as you say feel free to rate it 2.5 or below. 3.5 is surely giving it too much credit?
I obviously respect your opinion Ciperion, but disagree with Sound Awake being a natural progression from Themata. I spent years listening to Themata and when Sound Awake came along I honestly expected a similar album to Themata, I was very surprised by an album that was as progressive as it is. Unless by "natural progression" you mean they matured as a band whereas this time around there wasn't really anywhere to go so they just made something different for the sake of being different.

He can rate the album what he wants to rate it-- different strokes, man.
"It's fair to compare this to the previous album because it's the same damn artist. That's what people do."
This is so true too.

the highest rated albums of all time are 4.68
you think sound awake deserves to have the highest average of all time?
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.0
I said that's what I'd rate the albums further down, sorry for the confusion, shouldn't of used the word average.
If a band releases an album similar to their previous work I'll make comparisons, otherwise I'll judge the album on its own merits.

I like this album and don't give a shit what other people rated it. If I thought an album with a 2.1 average was a 4 I would 4 it. An average has nothing to do with your opinion. Why is this so difficult for other users to comprehend?
|
| |
Because if a majority of people hate an album, it generally sucks.
If you saw an album with a 4.5 avg would you not check it out? Same principle.
Really diggin' this album now. Will prob end up in top 10 of the year for me.

Album is unlikely to get above a 4 for me. Just... lacks something. For me, the album is Nachash, Aeons, Eidolon, Sky Machine and The Last Few, tend to skip the rest quite often even though the songs aren't that bad, they are just.. average. So really it is about a 3.5 from me + a 0.5 fanboy addition ;)
Props to the boys for getting #1 on the aria charts though, beating the likes of the rubbishness of p!ink and one direction.

^ this comment is AIDS.
Either way, the only actual songs here that I would scrap are Nachash and Float. A.M. War, We Are and The Refusal is one hell of a triple whammy, and the mix sucks obviously but the songwriting is fantastic (As long as you have good speakers).

Personally, Float is one of my favourite tracks here.

Float is great yeah, love the laid-back vibe. I would scrap the useless interludes and also The Last Few cos that one is boring.
