on the subject of vocals, the total absence of layne's incredible belting vocals has probably contributed a lot to the underwhelming reception for this one -- the constant multitracked harmonies definitely add something to the atmosphere though
i assume he was having trouble performing by this point

he just simply doesn't bring anything interesting to the table. the grit in his vocals is like pure diet stuff and when he tries to be technically good at singing it becomes simply uninspired
