@cyg fair enough. i would just assume that giving an album a 5 might as well be giving it elite status, but everyone's rating philosophies are different i guess. i see you 5'd Stay What You Are as well, and yeah, it rules pretty hard

"yeah and pop punk that got airplay 10 years ago sucked just as much as pop punk that gets AirPlay right now"

Is that relevant? Whether or not you liked them, there's a reason Bleed American is at a 3.9, Tell All Your Friends is at 4, etc. People connect these albums to their high school years and that's what makes them classics to them, which is the fucking point of mentioning them in this review. I couldn't give two fucks what you think about radio pop-punk of 2003. It doesn't change what I'm saying at all.

They don't mean elite as in great, they mean elite as in elitist.

"when the reviewer clearly has only heard radio pop punk I mean guys come on"

why are you assuming this? he's not gonna go list a bunch of under-exposed bands just for points. he's listing the most popular albums in the genre so, surprise!, they're "radio" pop punk.

can you elaborate on your point at all, please? or are you just completely full of shit? saying "he's only heard radio pop-punk" doesn't tell me why this review "sucks"

disagree with it, that's totally cool, but if you're going to attempt to discuss why, maybe come to the argument armed with more than retarded, overused talking points.

"they mean elite as in elitist"

well in that case, obviously pop punk can't be elite. and i thought all this time they just meant elite as in better than most everything else! how silly of me

the only thing I'm getting from your posts hep kat is that you are once again upset that bands you don't like get more praise than bands you do. it's completely irrelevant, and face-palm-inducing because it's clear that you have no idea what point you are trying to make. you're just treading water going "grrrrrr no one agrees with me!!!!"

"Im sorry I pissed you all off so much but lol this kid is seriously using Sputnik ratings to justify his points"

Come on that's a blatant misrepresentation. My point was that whether or not you like them, those albums are classics to a lot of people, people whose taste in music is just as, if not more, developed as yours.

Clearly the first paragraph was talking about mainstream bands because, and I can't say this any more times, they're relevant to the fucking review. Because like it or not, The Queers and House Boat aren't land marks of the genre. They might be your personal favourites, and even underground classics. But as pop-punk exists in the public eye - hell, even on this website - the more important albums are some of the albums I mentioned.

The point of using 2003 mainstream pop-punk was to draw a comparison between high school and adulthood, one which is thematically very important in this album. Let me set this out for you very clearly: not very many people listened to The Queers in high school. A lot, and I mean a LOT of people here listened to Yellowcard and TBS and JEW because people don't necessarily have the most obscure tastes when they're kids. Bringing up those cult bands would serve absolutely zero purpose.

This argument has been very entertaining.

"Saying that the queers are not landmarks in the genre is by far the dumbest thing you've posted. This is hilarious because with every other genre of music Sputnik praises the indie/underground releases and demonizes most popular stuff (this is especially true with rap) but with pop punk it's literally the exact opposite

Saying ocean avenue is a landmark of pop punk is like saying st anger was a landmark of metal I mean lol come on guyz"

Listen, you are literally the only person out of 39 people who has negged this review. I'm not sure why I'm even indulging your condescending, dense ass. You couldn't be missing the point of the review, specifically the opening paragraph more. You clearly understand that at this point, and now you're just nit-picking wording and drawing irrelevant and ill-conceived comparisons.

I very clearly justified (though I had no obligation to do so) the bands I chose in the first paragraph. I don't give a flying fuck what your favourite pop-punk bands are, or whether you think that the ones that people listened to in high school and now regard as classics of the genre are total shit. You're being a contrarian asshole for the sake of expressing your infinite superiority in knowledge of a genre made for teenagers. Congratulations. I hope you feel really special for taking on the uncultured masses singlehandedly and coming out of it with a solitary neg and a sense of self-importance.

I'm done with this argument, despite how entertaining I'm sure it's been for everybody.

Anybody want to actually discuss the album?

I think the first and last songs are my favourites right now, but the singles are growing on me.

Yeah, I've been waiting for you guys to shut the fuck up so we can talk about this album.

So far my top 2 are "Funeral" and "Bloodstream".

"Funeral" really is jawdropping to me. I saw the soundoff "I Just Want to Sell Out My Funeral is a contender for song of the year" before I heard it and expected to be disappointed, but as soon as it went into the chorus from "There There" I knew it was something special.

I think Hep and Andcas are in entirely different playing fields of pop punk. Screeching Weasel vs. Yellowcard to me is like Converge vs. Killswitch Engage.

I wish I could see all the pop punk bands I added to the db. :/

Since my ratings wipes, I can't a bunch of them.

And the "I BET I'D BE A FUCKING COWARD" on "Bloodstream" fucking floored me.

"Teenage Parents" actually rules too.

hep kat, I'm not defending this review as a glorious explanation of pop-punk, nor did I ever infer that I was. do you want to actually speak to my points or do you just want to continue to deflect and avoid the argument? and I don't know who that "straw man" comment was meant for but if you're talking about me then you clearly didn't read any of my posts. I don't know why you're always so violently into these arguments, like, why don't you just discuss things like a rational person? I raise a good point, well, maybe not, but it deserves an actual explanation. you're turning into one of those users that never says anything of any value. again, it's ok to have the opinions that you do, but you need to figure out how to discuss them in a way that doesn't make you look like a 4 year old. and you're married with a kid? dear god, I hope you raise the child to use logic properly, honestly. Reading your posts, it worries me that the kid is going to grow up not knowing how an adult conversation sounds.
