Going for completely different things - Air were always aligned with the downtempo/‘chillout’ crowd.
Zero 7, the more relaxed Royksopp material, etc

Oh, they were definitely going for different things. I just thought your statement earlier amusingly fit Stereolab quite well and I just wanted to ref a band I love (and throw a lil shade in here).
as a big fan of downtempo and downtempo adjacent music, I'm also not massively into Zero 7 or Royksopp either. I'm sensing a pattern here.

Zero 7 were the by-product.
You cannot replicate without becoming staid .
Ironically the new version of this album is a breath of fresh air.

Long time I haven't listened to this, and I'm in a downtempo chilled out trip-hop mood.
Absolutely love All I Need.

If you’d have told me in 1998 that a remix would come out in 2025 that bettered the original I would’ve believed it. What I can’t believe is how good it is.
When Sexy Boy kicks and Kelly Watch the Stars are unmatched.
Amazing.
Vegyn has added some meat to the bones of what has always been one of my all time favourite albums.

The remix definitely breathed new life into this album for me (not that I ever really disliked it but I’ve been listening to it for over two decades now)

These remixes are super-smooth, great find mates!

The original is still better by quite a bit for having that futuristic retro, kitsch incredibly French atmosphere that you’d think there’d be a lot more examples of in mainstream culture but actually there aren’t.
The Vegyn mix is great though, sleek as fvck
Extra marks for turning the song that’s aged the worst in Sexy Boy into the best tune.

The original is definitely still king, the remix just gave it a more modern polish

Yep. This album has always been the absolute king of louche lounge kitch. It kickstarted a massive revival of it and is responsible for a lot of vocoder nonsense.
|
| |
A lot of it wasn’t that bad, but it definitely started to get very uninspired towards the latter half of the 00’s
|
| |
Only thing I don’t like about the remix is it made All I Need a much more somber tune when I’m so used to it being a cool, cathartic, sun going down kind of song.
I can see how others would like it though.

oop mt but uh yeah gotta spin this again soon

Yeah, All I Need’s original, more stripped version is better. But the remixes of Sexy Boy and Talisman are top shelf. I dig how the latter has a gentle nod to Daft Punk.
