Agreed, GD&S sucks actually. Like completely sucks. Ended a really solid album on a weak note.

Intentions or Desires? Desires is really average.
Best song is Self-Starter or Type 3.

Modern Age was my favorite at first but it lost its appeal pretty quickly

I'm surprised more people don't say this. I mean, I like everything Anberlin does so I'm an exception, but honestly I don't think it a particularly good song.
While I'm criticizing this album, I also do not like Orpheum much. I think it has terrible production---overcrowded with instruments that are all blended together. Additionally, I don't like the production on Vital much. Some songs I think they capture the essence perfectly (Self-Starter, Other Side) but other songs' production hurts the overall product (Modern Age's chorus! Why, Aaron, why?)
I want to lower this to a 4. Then I listen to the whole thing through and reaffirm my 4.5 rating.

this really isn't as good as everyone here is making it out to be, but it's a good album nevertheless

What's wrong with Modern Age's chorus? I've listened to that song probably a total of 30 times and I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. Also, GD&S is a bit underwhelming compared to their previous closers, but I still think it's a good song. The group chanting bit towards the end blows me away every time.

I agree with anyone that says Other Side is a bit repetitive. And disagree with anyone that says GD&S is a bad song. And disagree with anyone that says anything bad about Modern Age.

The odd production doesn't bother you? I don't know how to explain it besides the fact that it sounds like I'm listening to a low-quality rip of the song with fuzzing when it gets loud,

The production of this album is horrendous. I don't know what happened this time around?

The odd part is that it's all intentional. Not sure why though... Sprinkles did a great job with Cities and NTFP.

I think it is man. I honestly can't stand it. That is if the version I dl'd is the finished product.

Yeah, the vocals on the chorus of Modern Age sound weird as fuck

The production isn't that great I agree. They should have put more emphasis on the kick drum and make it more bassier and thump harder. The bass guitar through the album is louder then the kick drum, thats not good mixing.

I saw these dudes last year on their tour for their last album and the show was so fucking terrible I couldn't even listen to them for a while. Anything post-Cities has just been a complete bust for me but I still feel like giving this a chance at some point...

"do you have bad speakers?"
No man, it's definitely the production.

It was just such a soul-less overproduced show. So many synced stage moves, over-exaggerated hand gestures, an extra keyboardist, an extra guitarist, an extra percussionist. Shit was weak.

Did you go when they were with Switchfoot? I thought they were great. I did have the flu though

marksellsuswallets: I also hated the two albums after Cities but I can't stop listening to this.
it's at least a little overproduced but it's just so good.
