Blood Mountain has awesome individual songs, but as an album this one shits all over Blood Mountain

Blood Mountain wishes it had a song as good The Last Baron, only thing it clears here is The Wolf Is Loose is a better opener

it's weird how this one has the tracks that are 3x longer but Blood Mountain is the one that sounds far more unfocused

You're telling me that drum fill and pick slide don't make you lose your fucking mind???

Wolf Is Loose is prob my second favorite opener from Mastodon (obviously first place is Blood and Thunder)
Oblivion is fucking incredible, but Wolf Is Loose just has some different energy - that opening drum fill straight into that heavy af riff and vocals, c'mon now

make fun of prog metal
|
| |
this has by far the weakest opening 1-2 of any of their good albums despite Crystal Skull being a headful of mid. no prog album as high on its own smack as this one has any right to take this long to warm up

For me: Oblivion > Pain With An Anchor > Blood and Thunder > Crusher Destroyer > Black Tongue > Wolf is Loose
|
| |
Album Rating: 3.5
The Wolf Is Loose rules tho
Blood & Thunder is its only competition there
Crusher Destroyer v good too

just give me ghost of karelia and title track and can the rest
|
| |
Crusher Destroyer is straight up the best Mastodon and excels in all the ways that this falls short, Wolf probs runner up but it's been a while
Oblivion is all about that intro - changes of pace are mostly jank and that chorus has never hit right
