In my opinion, Opeth albums always require a significant investment of time in order to "get" what is going on. This album is no different, but repeated listening will pay dividends. The musicianship on this album is second to none (as with all of Opeth's stuff) and I don't agree that the tempo changes add nothing to the songs. For example, the tempo changes in the song "Nepenthe" are nothing short of brilliant - the barely audible jazz-like playing broken by the funky keyboard riff, then leading into a blazing guitar solo. I'm not going to say that this is Opeth's greatest work, but it certainly does nothing to diminish their brand. I do wonder how many times the reviewer had heard the album prior to writing the review?

I am an avid Opeth fan and this is a huge disappointment.
This bores me like Porcupine Tree bores me.
I'd rather listen to old Genesis than this.
I should have seen this coming from the last album, which was good but not great.

If this album had been made by another band everyone would be praising it and its average rating would be something like 4.0 or 4.1 ... I don't get some people on this site, giving 5s to that shitty Ne Obliviscaris album which isn't even true Metal and then complaining about Opeth not being Metal enough

especially with all the praise damnation gets, this album has a 3.5 and damnation has a 4.2. and in all honestly 3 is a little low for my rating, i'm gonna jam it a couple of times today and let it grow on me, then listen to deliverance for some balance
