if you read the lyrics in order and in the context of the concept of the album they make more sense, the first song shadow is from the perspective of someone returning to a destroyed town, and then it talks of someone who betrayed the town, and one of them wants to kill the betrayer with a dagger, and there's a plague that destroys the town, and etc. lyrics aren't that bad, nothing i would really quote or remember though

Lyrically speaking, I just think for a concept they seem rather generic.

Haha low blow dude :P

do all lyrics have to be ultra-creative and groundbreaking though? as long as they fit the music and don't make you cringe

It really depends on the type of music for me. On albums like this where basically everything is growled, I couldn't care less what the lyrics are because I don't hear them. There are cases where growling is intelligible, but it's relatively rare.
Plus I think the appeal of this particular style of music (and metal in general really) comes much more from the music itself.. the rhythm, the riffs, the overall intensity, and for this album the juxtaposition between heavy and soft (and I do agree with Wiz here that the soft sections are a bit monotonous). So yeah for a musical style like this, even if the lyrics actually are intelligible, the attraction really comes from the music anyway. This obviously changes drastically with different styles of music though. Lone folk singer with an acoustic guitar? Good lyrics are basically a necessity.

A lone folk singer/ singer/songwriter can have about as good lyrics as you can get but their vocals/vocal lines and or music will in most cases be rather uninteresting.
That aside, I agree with what you said.

@Sound.. Yeah that's totally true as well. The lyrics definitely play a more pivotal role though compared to something like this. But yeah it's not like the music can go by the wayside if the lyrics are good enough.

Lyrics don't matter for certain genres, matter a lot for others.

If I can't understand what screamers are saying at least 30% of the time then I don't care.
Like Tommy Rodgers. I can't understand him at all
