Some drone is very repetitive and some is quite protean. I can understand not liking this or drone music in general. I actually really enjoy repetitive music. Very meditative. Although I think this variates more than most drone I've heard.

def. you have your ambient drone (soft or harsh), drone doom metal, or drone mixed in with other genres (indie, chamber, punk, vocal, classical, etc.)

just 2 or 3 years ago i would have fucking hated drone. cool how my taste naturally shifted without me having to force myself into anything

I like the sound of the drone in the first track I just don't think it needs to go on for an eternity

drone, and most repetitive styles of music in general actually, were an acquired taste for me. i remember disliking most of it back when it was first introduced to me. maybe more exposure to the style will help foster appreciation for it, idk. most of my friends hate repetitive droney stuff too tho so it's definitely not a foreign opinion to me.

could also try approaching it differently i suppose. maybe treat it as an ancillary stimulus, while you are focusing on something else like reading or writing or whatever and let it sorta meld into the background

"How is knowledge of a genre going to change my perspective of the music I didn't like the first time around? "

Listening to hundreds of albums in any given style will change your perspective tho.

No but my point is when people say someone is unknowledgable of something, and that somehow knowing more about the genre will make them suddenly somehow think the sounds they're hearing that they think are shit are somehow good. Maybe it'll lend some context as to how others like it, but I sincerely doubt it's going to magically make me think it sounds good

Halifax - I definitely think that's the best way to appreciate these things. Actively listening to them is boring. Listening to them while cleaning or something makes more sense. That's what i do with Gas' albums

more knowledge of any subject leads to deeper appreciation which doesn't necessarily have to mean 'liking it' but it may lead to such feelings. it's just when you remarked the drone track sounded 'repetitive', that sounded like a negative slight and also as if you didn't know that repetition is a quality to drone.

guys who arent halifax and redinsquished chill

gyro is bro and its fine that he doesnt like this

@gyro i feel like you probably don't like this for the same reasons you dont like Old Dreams.
which is a little enlightening tbh because as a hardcore the knife fan i was too knee jerk to look beyond the personal artist... but not enjoying this too makes it make way more sense.

i would attribute both this and old dreams within the course of the album to films like Limits of Control by jim jarmusch. parts of the album are purely cinematic because they exist within a style of like... 'art' music i guess that they portray themselves that way. its the same as like divisive opinions on nicolas winding refn or david lynch to me... i can understand why someone just wouldnt have the patience. and thats cool. but for me music or film hat is so monumentally tremendous is so much more gratifying when it gets to that point if they bide their time and lull you into the space first. im not a patient person by virtue and im working on it and music like this and movies like those have taught me that patience can be such a more orgasmic sense of gratification than stuff that tries to just grab your attention the whole time. thats just why i like it tho. also here is a boris song that is to me basically a 15 minute version of feedbacker in terms of quality so u might like this a lot; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGrLmrFEjeA&list=PLC8712F69850D64FE&index=8

Cool, I'll check that out now, potsy.

I'll never understand that knife song, which might seem weird since one of my top 10 favorite albums ever is tomorrow, in a year and so much of that is droney and meandering. And for the record, I love David lynch! I get what you mean about patience, especially pertaining to him lol.

I've probably dug myself a hole with this rating, if it ever goes up. I love parts of this but I just can't seem to get past the beginning. As background noise while I'm doing something it isn't so bad. It kind of gets me in a productive mood with some artists like gas and Tim hecker. I'm just now coming back to this after years of pessimism. I didn't enjoy it much, but I might continue to try it (especially if I do plan on writing a negative review). My first ever Boris album was new album, and from there I heard mostly newer material.

i usually just listen to this on vinyl with my eyes closed baked as fuck chillin on my bed tbh
the droning at the beginning lulls u into a meditative state before the crazyness begins and i love it for that.

that ultimately is what I love about drone. the meditative doors it opens depending on moods and textures.

For that purpose I can absolutely see its value. I've used ambient much the same - dating way back to when I first heard the disintegration loops. Great for studying or just relaxing to while doing other things; something on the back burner to set the mood.
