I think they should let Portnoy back in the band on the condition that he starts drinking again and snorting blow behind his kit at shows

OK, whether they tried for a new direction, or Mangini is just 'easing' his way in, since he did say he didn't want to replace MP, I'm just not impressed at the drums.
I'd hate to say 'maybe next time' because it's just too early to tell. I like Dram Theater, but maybe, just maybe an actual break wouldn't hurt

the ballads have awesome musical arrangements but yet his lyrics are painful...

Yeah. As far as progressive metal is concerned, this doesn't even compete with the new Textures album.

Coincidence! I just had my copy of Textures today. I'm putting it on play right now

Would be true if Beneath the Surface didn't have the best lyrics on here.

and then kick labrie the fuck out
I have nothing against the man, but he's really the thing that's keeping them from being taken seriously, barring Rudess's occasional noodling.

first DT album I've liked in a while. But yeah the drums are basically quarter note crash and snare alternates with random 8th fills. Portnoy was so much better.

It's very difficult to understand why Mangini played it "safe", he should have gone all out buried Portnoy, the drumming was such a bore.
Nice review!

I'm actually digging this. When Portnoy left, I instantly assumed "Oh, more solo moments that seem to come from nowhere with no imagination from Petrucci and Rudess, awesome." but was pleasantly surprised by how they handled the songwriting in it. The solos seem to be much more akin to the older albums, and I can now only assume they were what they were because Portnoy had so much control over the Dream Theater machine. Now that they're actually writing again, they're putting much more in it as far as interesting, not just technical. Anyway, that's my two cents, I'll see how much I like it by the end of a few more listens and rate it.

If it weren't for the intro in Bridges in The Sky and all of Far From Heaven this would be higher. Aw well, overall pretty good effort but like others have said, too reminiscent of past Dream Theater greatness.

images and words, awake, live scenes from new york and train of thought are all perfect album art covers. I used to love Octavarium's cover too but it grew off me in lieu of Six Degrees

Liked it more than Black Clouds, that's for sure and true about Mangini's restrained playing, but I guess we'll have to wait at least 2 years to hear him full out...

I'm really enjoying Breaking All Illusions.
What's with all the ballads though?

Yeah, I got to listen a second time on a long drive and it was better. 4/5 now. Lost Not Forgotten is the worst track on the album.
