Technically yeah lol
I do love this album
While this album as a whole is one of the most heaviest albums yet (if not THE heaviest) they do have songs that get a tad higher on the heavy scale

one of the few records I can actually listen to from them

^Have you checked out Metropolis?

A couple of my friends worshiped these guys in high school so I've heard all of them. The mechanical musicianship and shitty vocals usually have me giving up after only a song or two.

something about this album just clicks with me

Hmmmm, well to each their own.
I recently worked my way through their discography, and one thing that does become abundantly clear when hit with all their material in one hit is how over the course of their career they've slowly lost the ability to write proper songs.
Images and Words and Awake and to a lesser extent Falling Into Infinity contain their most well written songs. ACOS as well.
But when JR was welcomed into the fold they immediately regressed into more of an extended jam type vibe.
I will always respect DT and will always be excited at the prospect of a new release from them though.
But in saying that, BCASL did surprise the hell out of me though....

I think their masterpiece is Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. It's ambitious, but very reserved at the same time. The second disc alone shreds all criticism that Dream Theater is just a glorified wankfest of a band.

I'd agree with you on the 2nd disc, not the first. Aside from The Glass Prison I don't like it all that much.

I can't get over this album. It amazing from the beginning of As I Am to the end of In the Name of God. My favorites are This Dying Soul and Stream of Consciousness though.
This album took me a few listens to fully appreciate. I didn't like it at all the first time I listened to it, but now I think it's amazing; the only Dream Theater albums that can even come close to being as good are Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and A Change of Seasons.

As I am was pretty much a borefest.
The song has got its moments though. Like the solo, which obviously the main attraction of the song.

Probably the best DT album. Without too much of the wankery, Star Wars keys and gay vocals along with some heavy riffs and good songwriting this album stands out.
