Previous album had some songs I liked a lot more than these but I feel this is a better album as a whole.

This album started off so damn well, it was perfect up until "the cascades" and then the last half of the album is a snoozefest except for a couple songs. I was actually excited to agree with sputnik on their top albums for once.

Unless you're a massive folk music fan, this review is completely worthless.

Then again maybe you couldn't write it any other way Tyler, since very few people besides die-hard folk music fans will take any interest in this at all.

The review seems intent on avoiding the rather obvious fact that unless you really really REALLY dig folk music, this album is only mediocre at best, and overwhelmingly boring at worst. Dylan was so good because his music TRANSCENDED the genre of folk. Putting these guys on par with him is laughable, and so is giving this the tag of 'classic.'

Speak for yourself bud. =)

Don't see the problem with being a great folk album for folk fans... rate the album as it is, not who
it appeals to. =)

lol i'm speaking for a lot more than just myself.

i agree that the number of people an album appeals to shouldn't determine it's rating. But it SHOULD determine or at least affect the album's review. Tyler wrote this review in such a way that the only people who would get anything out of it would be folk music fans. He didn't give anyone else any reason to listen to the album. And when you rate an album a 5, you've GOT to consider it's reception beyond just the core fanbase.

With a 'classic' album, you have to think outside it's genre. Not doing so would be like rating an N'SYNC album a 5. Sure they might have a featured album, and sure they might be at the top of the boy-band heap. But any serious music fan knows that all boy-band music is terrible, and even if an N'SYNC album is the "best" of this bunch, it only means it's a slightly lesser degree of terrible than the rest.

Obviously Fleet Foxes deserves a higher rating than N'SYNC, but ranking an album by either group a 'classic', along with the premier albums of music history, is ludicrous in both cases for the same reason.

I think Fleet Foxes is one of the most transcendent, accessible folk groups around.

Fleet Foxes are rather widely appealing. =/
I mean; 'White Winter Hymnal' has 4 million views on Youtube. I doubt that's all folk music fans.

But you make a good point ScorpionStan; that perhaps music that only appeals to genre specific fans; shouldn't be considered a classic. Saying that; there are heaps of classics in folk music that would be considered the same as what you believe from 'Helplessness Blues'. For instance; Woody Guthrie's music.

I feel like Robin kind of sings the same way every song...and I don't love it.

The music is ok though, a lot of different sounds and surprises

Sam Amidon is pretty transcendental Tyraelxy

Here's his version of the old murder ballad 'How Come That Blood'.

Granted almost none of his songs are his own; the music is unique in terms of folk.

Helplessness Blues is a great song, and The Shrine/An Argument kicks ass too, but the majority of this album gets on my nerves if I listen to it all at once

My favourite bit is when Pecknold's voice peaks in The Shrine. This album's doing for me what their debut did: offering some great songs, a really solid sound, but not quite shining as brightly as I'd hoped.

yeah maybe that's because so much crap passes for "folk music" nowadays. Don't get me wrong...they're

good, and they may be one of the best of the modern era of folk, but we're talking about LEGENDS when

it comes to folk history. idk if i'd call Fleet Foxes "legendary."
