I understand that something can be musically impressive and still boring, but if it's boring then it isn't enjoyable, and so surely doesn't warrant a 'Great' rating

Typically I try to be more objective with my ratings, as opposed to whether I simply enjoy it or not. I think it deserves a 3.5 in terms of overall quality because it IS a good album; I personally just find it rather boring.

Hmmm well I haven't rated this yet, I need to listen to it a few more times but I will probably rate it a 3.5 or 4. The songs themselves are great, there's not a bad song on here, which is probably why it warrants a 3.5, but put together in an album and it just drags on a little too much. But 3.5 for consistency, I guess.

Of course music is mostly subjective, but you can also listen to something and objectively decide whether it is fairly high or low in actual quality without interjecting your own personal feelings about it.
Sorry you can't hear something you don't like, but still admit that it's good.

if you dont base it on your opinions at all then there is nothing to base it on, unless there were set rules about what good music is, but there arent, hence music being subjective.
